Jose Riveiro Focused on Orlando Pirates’ Success Amid Contract Uncertainty

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has emphasized his commitment to the club’s ambitions, stating that his mandate and responsibilities drive him forward. However, he remained tight-lipped about his future with the Buccaneers as his contract nears its expiration in June.
Riveiro’s Dedication to Pirates’ Mission
Speaking at a press conference at Rand Stadium ahead of their highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, Riveiro acknowledged the positive atmosphere within the team.
When asked about his future at the club, the Spanish tactician opted not to discuss contract details but instead reiterated his focus on the job at hand.
“We are here to talk about the game on Sunday and not my contract or future. But, well, obviously I can give you a standard answer that my responsibility and my mandate are why I’m sitting here. This is what the club expects from me,” Riveiro said.
He further explained that football is more than just the time spent on the field, as both players and technical staff must dedicate themselves fully to their craft.
Continuous Learning in the South African League
The 48-year-old coach also spoke about the ongoing learning experience in South African football, highlighting how the dynamic nature of the game requires constant adaptation.
“In my position, if you want to improve the team, analyze, learn, and continue studying the game, then there is never a time when you say you now know everything. You never stop,” he added.
Riveiro acknowledged the weight of expectations that come with coaching a big club like Pirates, where millions of fans rely on their performances.
“This is a constant opportunity to learn and try new things, sometimes taking risks, and sometimes following what others are doing as well,” he concluded.
Top-of-the-Table Clash Against Sundowns
Pirates will host log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Sunday at 15:30 in a crucial fixture that could shape the title race. While Riveiro’s future remains uncertain, his immediate focus is on securing a positive result against their toughest league rivals.
