Josip Maria Bartomeu received a vote of ‘no confidence’ from the club’s ‘socios’. Approximately 20 000 FC Barcelona fans had signed a petition demanding that he steps down from his role with immediate effect.
Bartomeu took over from Sandro Rossell in 2014. The last President to complete his term was Joan Laporta.
Josip Maria Bartomeu announced his resignation live on Barcelona TV.
“It’s a thought-out, serene, informed decision” Bartomeu said.
“The easiest thing after the Champions League defeat was to resign, but one had to take decisions amid an unprecedented global crisis,”
When speaking about the incident in which Lionel Messi wanted to leave, Bartomeu refused to leave at that time and let the club be run by interim individuals who will also soon depart the club.
He claims that his leadership was crucial at that time, particularly with hiring a new coach while attempting to keep Lionel Messi at the club.
“Who would have ensured that Messi stayed? Who would have hired a new coach?” Bartomeu exclaimed.
“This is a thought out and relaxed decision, agreed with all my fellow directors.”
Barcelona take on Juventus in the UEFA Champions League this evening. They face Getafe in La Liga over the weekend.
