Junior Khanye Backs Orlando Pirates Ahead of Soweto Derby Showdown Against Kaizer Chiefs
The stage is set for one of Africa’s most iconic football clashes, as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs face off in the first Betway Premiership Soweto Derby of the 2024/25 season. The much-anticipated match will take place at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, with three points, bragging rights, and title ambitions all on the line.
Speaking ahead of the derby, former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has shared his analysis of the encounter, offering his take on which side holds the upper hand.
Khanye’s Insights on the Soweto Derby
Khanye, a well-known analyst in South African football, emphasized that form and prior performances often mean little when it comes to the Soweto Derby. “As we all know, for the Soweto Derby we can’t talk about the two teams’ form and performances to formulate our predictions. The players don’t need any motivation for that one to perform; they just know what is required,” Khanye told the Siya crew.
He added that the preparation leading up to the match is critical for both teams, as there will be little room for on-the-day adjustments. “For the coaches too, there will be no time to do any work on the day of the game and on the field. All the work in preparing for the game has to be finalized by the end of the week.”
Pirates on Top Form
Khanye, however, did not shy away from praising Orlando Pirates, pointing out that they have been in excellent form this season. “We can’t ignore the fact that Pirates are on form. For me, they are the second-best team in the league behind (Mamelodi) Sundowns. Qualifying for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League proves that Pirates are doing well, and credit to them for that.”
With their strong run in domestic and continental competitions, Pirates bring an edge of experience and confidence to the derby. “If I have to predict the winner, I will say Pirates have got the upper hand over Kaizer Chiefs because of the many competitive matches they have played so far this season and the experience gained by their players in the Champions League. I don’t think there will be any Pirates player that will be playing with fear in the derby,” he added.
What’s at Stake?
Both teams enter the derby with high stakes. Chiefs currently sit fifth in the league standings, while Pirates are in second place, with both sides vying for a spot in next season’s CAF Champions League and aiming to stay in the title race.
Beyond the league implications, the Soweto Derby remains a battle for pride and dominance between two of South Africa’s footballing giants. With tens of thousands of fans set to pack the FNB Stadium, the atmosphere promises to be electric.
The Soweto Derby is never short of drama, passion, and unforgettable moments. As Junior Khanye rightly pointed out, this match transcends form and statistics. While Pirates may come into the game with an edge based on their current performances, the unpredictable nature of the derby ensures that fans can expect a thrilling contest.
