Kaizer Chiefs Back Nasreddine Nabi Despite Challenging Debut Season

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi may be under intense scrutiny after a rocky debut campaign, but insiders close to the club insist that the Tunisian tactician still enjoys the full backing of management ahead of the crucial Nedbank Cup final.

The 2-1 loss to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s Soweto Derby added fuel to growing criticism from fans and pundits alike, especially with Chiefs languishing in ninth place on the DStv Premiership table. But despite mounting pressure, club officials appear committed to giving Nabi time to implement his long-term vision.

Management Staying the Course

According to sources within Naturena, there is no immediate threat to Nabi’s position — regardless of the recent results or media speculation. One insider shared that while expectations were high when Nabi was appointed, the club recognizes that turning things around will take time.

“I don’t think we can say Nabi is feeling the heat, but obviously the pressure is there. He came highly recommended and the results have not been good — that’s what puts pressure on him. But management is supporting him. That’s what helps the whole situation right now,” the insider told Soccer Laduma.

A second source reinforced that Chiefs’ hierarchy remains united in its support of Nabi, confirming that he has been assured of his job for next season.

“If he was truly under threat, management wouldn’t be giving him that assurance. It’s clear that the leadership believes in his journey and sees potential for improvement. So the pressure may be there from fans and media, but not from within the club,” the source added.

High Stakes at Moses Mabhida

Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium will serve as a defining moment for Nabi. Not only is it a chance to end the club’s 10-year trophy drought, but a victory would also provide much-needed credibility for the coach and help win over frustrated supporters.

While reports previously suggested Nabi needed to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final to stay in the job, Chiefs went on to deliver an impressive performance, booking their place in the final. Despite ongoing rumours, current indications point to a management team committed to continuity rather than panic.

A Season of Mixed Fortunes

Nabi’s tenure so far has been one of inconsistency. Chiefs have failed to secure a place in the top eight — leaving their MTN8 qualification hopes hanging by a thread and out of their control. Yet the club’s cup run has been a silver lining, providing a glimpse of the potential Chiefs saw when hiring the former Young Africans SC boss.

With mounting pressure from supporters, a divided media narrative, and critical matches still to play, Nabi remains at the centre of the storm. However, it’s clear that Kaizer Chiefs’ management is playing the long game, hoping the Tunisian can deliver both results and stability in seasons to come.

Victory on Saturday could mark the start of that journey — or reignite the flames of doubt should Amakhosi fall short again. All eyes are now on Durban as Kaizer Chiefs prepare for their biggest match in years.
