Kaizer Chiefs Coach Nasreddine Nabi Clarifies Best Position for Glody Lilepo

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has provided clarity on the best position for January signing Glody Lilepo, who has made an immediate impact since joining the club.
Lilepo arrived at Amakhosi in the most recent transfer window for just under R10 million and has hit the ground running, scoring three goals and providing an assist in his first five appearances. However, questions have arisen regarding his ideal role within the team, particularly after he played multiple positions in Chiefs’ goalless draw against Cape Town City on Tuesday.
Nabi Defines Lilepo’s Primary Role
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Nabi confirmed that Lilepo is most effective as a winger, despite occasional experimentation with other roles.
“I think the first position for him is a winger – right, left, but really, he is a winger,” Nabi explained.
“Sometimes in France, he played as a second striker at Valenciennes, but that’s not his first position.”
His statement sheds light on where Chiefs fans can expect to see Lilepo deployed moving forward, helping to bring stability to the team’s attacking approach.
Chiefs’ Struggles in Front of Goal
Despite Lilepo’s individual brilliance, Chiefs continue to struggle with their finishing, an issue that was evident against Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium. Nabi expressed his frustration over his team’s inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
“Today, in the last 20 minutes, we pushed [Pule] Mmodi on the wing, and we pushed more players into the 18-yard area. I think you observed it,” said Nabi.
“We continued to create more chances, but we couldn’t score. It’s not dramatic, but it’s very bad because it’s not the first time we have a chance to go up [the table], and we drop points.”
The coach also pointed out that this has been a recurring issue throughout the season.
“If you remember, at the start of the season and now, the same mistakes are continuing. You have a chance to go up [the table], but you lose this chance.
“Sometimes you need evaluation on why and what is the problem because today, the normal score should have been 3-0 or 4-0.”
Amakhosi’s Attacking Options
With Lilepo now firmly established as a winger, Chiefs have several other attacking options available, including Pule Mmodi, Wandile Duba, Tebogo Potsane, and Ashley Du Preez. However, the team’s inability to convert chances remains a concern that Nabi will need to address if Amakhosi hope to improve their league standing.
As Chiefs continue their pursuit of a top finish, all eyes will be on Lilepo and whether his impressive form can help solve their goal-scoring woes.
