Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela Continue Fourth World Cup Assignment in Houston as FIFA Trust Builds Consistency

Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela are set to continue their steady involvement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this weekend, as they take on their fourth consecutive match duties in Houston. The South African officiating pair will once again operate in supporting roles when Cape Verde face Saudi Arabia at the NRG Stadium on Saturday morning. Their repeated appointments highlight FIFA’s confidence in their consistency and match control across multiple fixtures. So far, they have not been given central on-field responsibilities such as referee or assistant referee positions. Instead, they have worked in key support roles that keep matches running smoothly behind the main officiating team.

Their most recent assignment came on Tuesday when Portugal delivered a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, a match held at the same Houston venue. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in that encounter, but the focus for Tom and Siwela remained on their officiating responsibilities. Tom served as the fourth official, managing technical area duties and assisting with administrative match control. Siwela operated as the reserve assistant referee, ready to step in if needed and supporting the match officials from the sidelines. The game added to their growing experience in high profile fixtures involving top international teams.

This was not their first involvement with Portugal during the tournament. Earlier, both officials were part of Portugal’s opening match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also held in Houston. In addition, their first World Cup assignment saw them take charge of support roles during the Group E match between Germany and Curaçao. Across all these matches, their duties have remained consistent, with Tom acting as fourth official and Siwela covering reserve assistant referee responsibilities. Despite the repetition of roles, their presence across multiple group stage matches signals trust from FIFA in their reliability.

Their upcoming appointment for Cape Verde versus Saudi Arabia will follow a similar structure. They will once again support a European led officiating team that includes referee Francois Letexier, along with assistants Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni from France. This consistency in structure reflects FIFA’s preference for experienced and coordinated referee teams during the group stages of the tournament. For Tom and Siwela, it will mark their fourth match without being assigned direct whistle duties or assistant referee lines on the field. As the World Cup approaches its 64th match, the South African pair remain active but still waiting for a shift into more central officiating roles.

Their journey so far has drawn attention because several other African officials have already been assigned main refereeing duties during the tournament. Officials such as Mustapha Ghorbal, Jalal Jayed, Dahane Beida, Amin Omar, and Pierre Atcho have all had opportunities to take charge of matches on the field. Tom and Siwela, by contrast, have remained in supporting positions despite multiple appointments. All referees are based in Houston for this stage of the competition, which has created a concentrated pool of officiating talent in one location. Their continued selection suggests they remain firmly in FIFA’s plans for the later stages of the competition, where rotation and expanded responsibilities often occur.
