Kaizer Chiefs Defender Rushwin Dortley Opens Up on Injury Recovery and Road Back to Action

Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley has revealed the challenges he has faced during his recovery following a serious injury last season that required surgery, causing him to miss key matches for both club and country.

The Soweto giants suffered a significant defensive setback in March 2025 when Dortley sustained the injury, halting the momentum of a player who had quickly become a revelation after his breakthrough season at Cape Town Spurs. Dortley’s rise had been meteoric, capturing attention with strong performances both domestically and internationally.

The 23-year-old defender had been a consistent figure for Bafana Bafana, featuring in every AFCON 2025 qualifier and not missing a single national team appearance since his debut in September 2024. His absence left a noticeable gap in Chiefs’ defensive lineup, forcing the club to rely on Given Msimango alongside Inacio Miguel. Unfortunately, Msimango also picked up a groin injury and is currently in rehabilitation, compounding Chiefs’ defensive woes.

In encouraging news for Amakhosi fans, Dortley is now approaching the final stages of his recovery. Speaking candidly to the club’s media team, he acknowledged the mental and physical toll the injury and surgery have taken.

“I was tackled from the side,” Dortley recalled. “This is my first serious injury that needed an operation. One has to be strong mentally, as you want to play, but you can’t. It’s not easy, but I do know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The resilient defender has joined the squad on their pre-season tour in the Netherlands, gradually regaining fitness and receiving strong support from those around him. Dortley credits his family and teammates for their vital role in his journey back to full fitness.

“I have a lot of support from my family—my girlfriend, my father, my mother, my brother… They are all playing a huge role in my road to full recovery,” he shared. “That’s how the team is. If one is injured, we can all feel the loss of a player. We are one!”

With pre-season underway and Dortley steadily regaining his strength, Chiefs supporters will be hopeful that their promising defender returns to the pitch soon, bolstering the team’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
