Kaizer Chiefs Eye Former Academy Star Lungelo Bhengu Amid Cost Concerns

Kaizer Chiefs are once again looking to re-sign one of their former youth development products, with reports indicating their interest in Cape Town Spurs defender Lungelo Bhengu. The 24-year-old was previously part of the Amakhosi academy before leaving in 2019 to join Maritzburg United.
Sources close to the club have revealed that Chiefs have already made inquiries about Bhengu’s availability, but his current market value, estimated between R5 million and R10 million, could be a stumbling block.
Chiefs’ Costly History of Buying Back Former Talents
This potential transfer mirrors past situations where Chiefs had to pay substantial sums to bring back their former youth products. The club previously re-signed Zitha Kwinika and Mduduzi Mdantsane, both of whom developed in the Amakhosi system before leaving and later returning at a hefty price.
“If this happens, it won’t be the first time. It happened with Zitha Kwinika and Mduduzi Mdantsane. Chiefs developed them but still had to pay to get them back. Maybe this will be a lesson to them this time around,” a source told the Siya crew.
Bhengu’s Role at Chiefs
If the deal goes through, Bhengu is expected to provide cover at right-back, a position where Chiefs have had to rely on makeshift solutions, such as midfielder Njabulo Blom. With Bhengu’s age and potential, the club sees him as a long-term option for their defensive setup.
Chiefs will now have to weigh their interest against the financial demands of Cape Town Spurs and determine whether history will repeat itself in yet another costly return of a former academy player.
