Kaizer Chiefs Eye Former Youth Star Mihlali Mayambela as Surprising European-Based Target Ahead of 2025/26 Season

As Kaizer Chiefs ramp up preparations for the 2025/26 season, a surprising name has emerged from their own historical pipeline in their quest to strengthen the squad ahead of a demanding campaign. Sources close to Amakhosi reveal the club is closely monitoring midfielder Mihlali Mayambela, a former youth product currently showcasing his talents in Europe.
According to an insider connected to both the Chiefs’ technical and management teams, Mayambela has expressed a keen interest in returning to South Africa and rejoining the Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants. “From what we know, Mihlali is apparently also interested in returning home and playing in the PSL. The people at Kaizer Chiefs know him very well as he was in their youth development structures before. They know what he can bring to the team in terms of attacking options,” the source told Siya Crew.
The interest in Mayambela reportedly comes after difficulties in securing their preferred right winger, Oswin Appollis. A second insider, familiar with Chiefs’ transfer priorities, explained that the club is looking to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles, where delayed signings affected their league performance. “They have been struggling to get Appollis and don’t want to have another season where they cannot get the players they want on time and struggle in the league again. Since they will be competing in Africa, they want a strong, well-balanced team. It is believed that if they can’t get Appollis, they would rather have Mayambela. After all, they are both Bafana Bafana wingers,” the insider revealed.
At 28 years old, Mayambela has built most of his senior career in Europe, most recently playing for Aris Limassol in Cyprus, where he enjoyed regular game time and contributed goals. His international experience is notable, having earned several caps for Bafana Bafana and participating in the latest Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.
Soccer Laduma reached out to Kaizer Chiefs for an official comment on the potential signing but received no response at the time of publishing.
The prospect of Mayambela returning to Naturena is an intriguing development. His European experience could add a fresh attacking dynamic to Amakhosi’s playstyle, especially valuable as they aim to make a strong impression in both domestic competitions and CAF tournaments. The emotional resonance of coming back to the club where he developed could also fuel his motivation during what is expected to be the prime phase of his career.
While Mayambela is currently seen as an alternative option to Appollis, his acquisition would nonetheless strengthen Chiefs’ wing options, providing depth and versatility to the squad as they prepare for a challenging season ahead. With the club targeting a robust roster to compete on multiple fronts, the potential homecoming of this seasoned winger could prove a savvy move in Amakhosi’s transfer strategy.
