Kaizer Chiefs Left-Back Crisis Deepens as Injuries Leave Fernando Da Cruz With Few Options

Kaizer Chiefs’ left-back crisis has deepened at the start of the new season after Reeve Frosler and promising youngster Kabelo Nkgwesa joined an already lengthy injury list. The Glamour Boys have been forced to make changes in the position after first-choice left-backs Bradley Cross and Paseka Mako were both ruled out through injury. Nkanyiso Shinga has also remained unavailable since joining the club last season, further reducing Fernando Da Cruz’s options. The latest setbacks have left the Kaizer Chiefs coach facing a major selection headache just weeks into the campaign. The defensive disruption comes at a difficult time as Amakhosi look to build momentum and compete strongly across domestic competitions.
The club initially appeared to have a solution when versatile defender Reeve Frosler was moved into the left-back role. Frosler started each of Chiefs’ opening three matches and provided valuable cover on the left side of the defence. His ability to operate in different defensive positions made him an important option for Da Cruz while the club dealt with injuries to Cross and Mako. However, the situation changed ahead of Chiefs’ 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday. Da Cruz confirmed that Frosler had also suffered an injury, leaving the coaching staff with another important defensive problem to solve.
Frosler’s absence was made even more significant by the injury suffered by Kabelo Nkgwesa. The 19-year-old defender had recently been given an opportunity to make his senior debut against Sekhukhune United and impressed with his performance. His display raised hopes that he could provide an unexpected solution to Chiefs’ problems at left-back. Instead, Nkgwesa picked up an injury between the Sekhukhune match and the meeting with Sundowns. His setback meant Da Cruz had to find another emergency option for one of the most important defensive positions on the field.
Speaking after the hard-fought draw against Sundowns, Da Cruz confirmed the extent of the problem facing his squad. The French coach explained that the club had lost both Frosler and Nkgwesa in the space of a few days. His comments underlined just how quickly the situation had deteriorated for the Soweto giants. With several recognised left-backs already unavailable, Chiefs were left without a natural senior option for the position. The coach was therefore forced to adapt his tactics rather than allow the injuries to disrupt his entire defensive structure.
Pule Mmodi was eventually asked to operate as a left wing-back against Sundowns, highlighting the severity of Chiefs’ injury situation. Mmodi is primarily known for his attacking qualities, but the circumstances required him to take on additional defensive responsibilities. Deploying an attacker in such a role shows the limited choices currently available to Da Cruz. The decision also reflects the importance of tactical flexibility during periods when injuries affect several players in the same position. Chiefs managed to secure a point from the 1-1 draw, but the left-back problem remains unresolved.
The injury concerns extend beyond the left side of the defence, adding further pressure to the Chiefs squad. Striker Khanyisa Mayo is also sidelined, reducing Da Cruz’s attacking options as the team attempts to find consistency. Development product Thulani Mabaso is nursing an injury, while defenders Rushwin Dortley and Flavio Da Silva are also unavailable. These absences mean the coaching staff must manage a squad affected by injuries across several areas of the pitch. The growing list could make squad rotation increasingly difficult as Chiefs enter a demanding period of the season.
Bradley Cross remains one of the most notable absentees because of his importance to the left side of the defence. Cross had established himself as a first-choice option, meaning his injury already forced Chiefs to consider alternative solutions. Paseka Mako’s absence then reduced the depth available to Da Cruz even further. Shinga’s continued unavailability compounded the problem before Frosler and Nkgwesa were added to the list. With five players capable of filling the left-back role now unavailable, Chiefs face a situation that requires careful planning from both the technical team and club management.
The emergence of Nkgwesa had initially offered an encouraging development for Chiefs. Giving a young player an opportunity against Sekhukhune provided the defender with valuable senior experience and demonstrated Da Cruz’s willingness to trust emerging talent when necessary. His injury is therefore a setback not only for the immediate left-back problem but also for a player who had begun to attract attention after his senior debut. Chiefs will now have to monitor his recovery while continuing to search for short-term solutions. The club’s ability to manage the situation could have an important influence on the team’s performances during the early part of the campaign.
Da Cruz must now balance defensive stability with the need to maintain an attacking threat. Moving Mmodi into a wing-back role against Sundowns was one solution, but relying on improvised positions over an extended period could create additional tactical challenges. The coach may have to consider other players who can adapt to the role or adjust the team’s formation to compensate for the lack of natural left-backs. The 1-1 draw against Sundowns showed that Chiefs can remain competitive despite their injury problems, but tougher tests will follow. Maintaining consistency while key players recover will be one of Da Cruz’s biggest challenges.
The situation also highlights the importance of squad depth over a long domestic season. Injuries are an unavoidable part of football, but losing several players who can perform the same role places greater pressure on the remaining members of the squad. Chiefs will need their available players to demonstrate versatility while the medical and technical teams work on the recovery of those sidelined. The coaching staff will also have to assess whether existing squad members can provide reliable cover without weakening other areas. If the injury list continues to grow, the club could face even greater selection difficulties as the campaign progresses.
For now, the immediate priority for Kaizer Chiefs is to navigate the crisis without allowing injuries to derail their season. Cross, Mako, Shinga, Frosler and Nkgwesa are all unavailable, leaving Da Cruz with a serious shortage of options at left-back. The coach has already demonstrated a willingness to experiment by using Mmodi in a more defensive role, while the emergence of Nkgwesa before his injury showed that young players could also play a part. Chiefs will hope some of their injured defenders return soon as the demands of the season increase. Until then, Da Cruz will have to rely on tactical flexibility, squad depth and the resilience of his available players as the Glamour Boys attempt to overcome one of their most difficult early-season selection challenges.
