Kaizer Chiefs Legend’s Record at Risk: Peter Shalulile Closing in on Siyabonga Nomvethe’s All-Time PSL Goal Record

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shalulile is on the verge of breaking a long-standing Premier Soccer League (PSL) record, with millions of Namibians eagerly awaiting his achievement. The 31-year-old Namibia international has been in scintillating form since joining Sundowns from Highlands Park in the 2020/21 PSL campaign, and now he stands just three goals away from surpassing Bafana Bafana legend Siyabonga Nomvethe’s all-time PSL goal record of 129 goals.

Shalulile’s Incredible Rise at Sundowns

Since his arrival at Sundowns, Shalulile has established himself as one of the top strikers in the league. His impressive goal-scoring record, which includes two PSL Golden Boot awards, has solidified his status as a key player for the Brazilians. Despite his success, Shalulile continues to push for more, with the current campaign still offering him an opportunity to break Nomvethe’s record.

So far, Shalulile has netted 127 goals in the South African top tier, putting him within reach of rewriting the PSL history books. With just three goals left to break Nomvethe’s record, the forward is now focused on ensuring that he achieves this milestone before the season ends.

Nomvethe’s Record in Danger

Siyabonga Nomvethe’s record of 129 PSL goals has stood the test of time, with the former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu striker regarded as one of the best to have ever played in the league. Nomvethe, a Bafana Bafana legend, left an indelible mark on South African football, playing for several top clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Moroka Swallows.

Now, with Shalulile hot on his heels, the record is in danger of being surpassed. Nomvethe’s achievements are still widely celebrated, but the threat of Shalulile’s imminent breakthrough has sparked excitement in both Namibia and South Africa.

Namibia’s Support for Shalulile

Namibia’s head coach, Collin Benjamin, has expressed his belief that Shalulile has all the qualities needed to break the record. Benjamin, who has worked closely with Shalulile in international football, highlighted his professionalism and leadership both on and off the field.

“What I think about the PSL record is about to break it [which] is the same view three million Namibians are having,” Benjamin said. “We are waiting and praying for him [Shalulile] to do it. He knows that we are proud of him.”

Benjamin also emphasized the impact Shalulile has beyond football, noting that he’s a role model and leader within the national team.

“He’s an absolute professional, absolutely patriotic, and a leader on and off the field. He’s the first one that carries bags off the bus or off the airport, and all these things are his off-the-field leadership qualities,” he added.

Shalulile’s Current Form

Despite not having the most prolific season by his high standards, Shalulile has still managed to score six goals in 22 league appearances this campaign. With seven games remaining in the season, the opportunity remains for him to break the record and continue his legacy as one of the greatest strikers to ever play in the PSL.

Mamelodi Sundowns are currently in the hunt for their eighth consecutive PSL title, and Shalulile’s contribution will be pivotal to their success in both the league and continental competitions. Should he break Nomvethe’s record, Shalulile will further cement his place as one of the top players in South African football history.

What’s Next for Shalulile?

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Shalulile to see if he can achieve his goal of breaking the record. Sundowns’ remaining fixtures provide him with the perfect opportunity to surpass Nomvethe’s long-standing achievement, and fans in both Namibia and South Africa will be waiting in anticipation to see history made.
