Kaizer Chiefs’ New Signing Asanele Velebayi Joins Amid Legal Battle with Cape Town Spurs

Kaizer Chiefs’ newest signing, Asanele Velebayi, has expressed excitement over his move, though former club Cape Town Spurs is contesting his departure. Chiefs announced the acquisition of the 22-year-old winger as a free agent after a pursuit spanning two seasons.

The transfer process was complicated by Cape Town Spurs, who took the matter to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber, insisting Velebayi remained contracted to them despite the club’s relegation to the amateur ranks. Velebayi successfully challenged this claim and joined Chiefs last week at Naturena.

Velebayi can play across multiple attacking positions, including right wing and as a number 10, though he prefers the left wing. His versatility is seen as a key asset for Chiefs’ attacking setup.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., praised the new signing, calling him a “perfect fit” for the team. “We are happy to finally have Asanele with us. He is a great addition, and we believe he will add significant value because he is a perfect fit for our game model and the culture we have here at the Club,” Motaung said.

Despite joining the squad, Chiefs supporters may have to wait to see Velebayi in action. Cape Town Spurs have filed an appeal with SAFA’s Arbitration Tribunal challenging the PSL DC ruling. The outcome will determine when the young winger can officially feature for Chiefs.
