Kaizer Chiefs Strategise Ahead of Back-to-Back Soweto Derbies Amid Sirino Yellow Card Debate

Kaizer Chiefs are preparing for a pivotal period in their season as they gear up for two consecutive Soweto Derby showdowns against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The high-stakes double header begins with a crucial Betway Premiership clash on May 3, followed by the Nedbank Cup final just a week later on May 10.
Amid the intense build-up, a curious subplot has emerged involving Chiefs midfielder Gaston Sirino. The Uruguayan playmaker, who was on three yellow cards heading into last weekend’s league fixture, picked up a fourth booking during the goalless draw against Chippa United. The timing of the caution has raised eyebrows and prompted speculation that the yellow card may have been strategically earned to ensure Sirino’s availability for both upcoming derbies.
An insider close to the Amakhosi camp suggested the move was deliberate. “I don’t want to say whether it was (intentionally) planned or not. But you know Sirino was sitting on three yellow cards, and if he didn’t get one against Chippa, he risked getting booked against Marumo Gallants and missing the first Derby,” the source told the Siya crew.
“He got a yellow card in the Chippa game and will now be available for both derbies. I think he did it on purpose. It was well planned. That I can tell you.”
A second source added that other Chiefs players might be strategically managed for the April 27 fixture against Marumo Gallants to ensure peak readiness for the two Derby encounters. “Don’t be surprised if there are changes in the lineup. Some players could be rested to avoid injuries or yellow cards ahead of the derbies. For Sirino, he helped himself out and made sure he’s in the mix for both matches.”
Chiefs are currently in eighth place on the Betway Premiership table with 31 points, and with just five games remaining, every match is critical as they aim to secure a top-eight finish.
Despite the speculation, the club has remained silent on the matter. Attempts by Soccer Laduma to get an official comment from Kaizer Chiefs were unanswered at the time of publication.
The decision to rest or strategically manage players ahead of marquee fixtures is not uncommon in professional football, especially when the games in question could define the season. With silverware and bragging rights on the line, Amakhosi seem to be planning carefully to maximise their chances against a confident Orlando Pirates side.
Chiefs will host Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Saturday, April 27, before turning their full attention to one of South African football’s fiercest rivalries. All eyes will be on how coach Cavin Johnson—or his expected successor—navigates squad rotation while balancing league ambitions with cup glory.
