Kaizer Chiefs lost the ABSA Premiership title to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2020 season on the final day. Founder and chairman Kaizer Motaung still looks back on the day with sorrow.

Under the tutelage of German Ernst Middendorp, Amakhosi looked set to win their first league title since 2015. Going into 2020, they had mustered up a generous 13-point gap from 2019.

They were certainties for the league title. However, a string of calamitous performances and results gave Mamelodi Sundowns a glimmer of hope going into the last day of the season.

All Kaizer Chiefs needed to do was to win against Baroka FC on the last day to win the league. Unfortunately, they only drew 1-1.

This meant that The Brazilians could usurp them to the top of the league, after winning 3-0 against Black Leopards.

“As we continue with the journey, we are now in a very new environment in terms of what has befallen the world. Covid-19 has hit us very heavily.” Motaung told the media as the club celebrated their 52nd birthday.

“When it started, we were aiming to celebrate our 50th anniversary and things looked very bright until COVID hit us and we had to play under difficult conditions and could not end our 50th year with the league trophy, which was in our hands until the last 30 minutes of the season.

“Just recently we had an outbreak which was unprecedented in the country, where we had over 50 people affected, and which rendered us inactive. We could not play two games because we had to shut down the Village.

“We can never forget what has happened to us because of the pandemic and we extend our deepest condolences to those who left us, in all different sections of society, who became victims of this pandemic,” Motaung added.

Under Stuart Baxter, Amakhosi are unlikely to win the league title this season. Kaizer Motaung Still Reeling At 2020 League Slip on The Last Day!
