Karim Benzema Says This Ballon d’Or Is for The People! The Frenchman won the prestigious award last night.
Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or in France yesterday. He has credited all the people who have helped him in his career with the award.
At 34 years old, he became the oldest winner of the award since the 1950’s. He also became the first Frenchman since Zinedine Zidane in 1998 to win it.
“I call it the Ballon d’Or for the people because they’ve played their part by showing me their support.” Benzema said.
“That’s why I want to share this trophy with them. I like to share in life, and they too deserve it.
“They’ve always been there to help and motivate me.” He added.
When the striker joined the Madrid giants in 2009, he said that his role models were Zinedine Zidane and the original Ronaldo. These two men were in the audience with him as he accepted the award.
“The fact that I’m a footballer owes to my two idols: Ronaldo and Zidane. They’ve both won it and it’s special.
“That Zidane presented me with it is another special thing for me.”
The European champions have now seen their players win the award on 12 different occasions, matching the record of FC Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo won it 4 times while he was at the club.
“Real Madrid is the greatest club in the world, but you have to perform out on the pitch to win this trophy. I’ve got great respect for Florentino because he’s always backed me during the tough times.
“He came to my house to sign me, and he always told me that I’d win the Ballon d’Or and that makes me happy.”
