Karim Kimvuidi Tipped for Return to Former Club as Pirates Restructure Squad

Following the announcement of 10 new signings at Orlando Pirates, one player who could soon be on his way out is midfielder Karim Kimvuidi. Insiders close to both the Buccaneers and Durban City — formerly known as Maritzburg United — suggest that the 23-year-old could be returning to his former home in the Betway Premiership.

As reported by Soccer Laduma, the Soweto giants are currently working on offloading several players to make room for their fresh recruits. Among those potentially making way is Kimvuidi, who joined Pirates from Maritzburg United in 2023 on a three-year deal set to expire in 2026.

A source close to the KwaZulu-Natal club revealed that talks are already underway to bring the Congolese-born midfielder back to Durban. “Talks have started between the two clubs concerning the possibility of Karim (Kimvuidi) joining Durban City. What I am not sure is whether it will be a loan deal or a permanent one. But Durban City are interested in him and it will all depend on the ongoing talks now,” the insider said.

Meanwhile, within the Pirates camp, a separate source confirmed the club’s ongoing efforts to finalise its squad reshuffle, which includes determining the futures of several existing players. “At the moment they are finalising which players will leave the club and that’s why there is the issue of Karim Kimvuidi being linked to Durban City who have so far been believed to have shown interest in him,” said the insider.

Kimvuidi had a promising start in his debut season at Pirates, featuring in most matches and contributing goals from midfield. However, the 2024/25 season saw a dramatic dip in his game time, with limited appearances casting doubt over his long-term role at the club.

A move back to Durban City could provide Kimvuidi with a much-needed platform to relaunch his career, especially with a likely increase in playing time. For Durban City, re-signing a familiar talent could also strengthen their midfield options as they aim to climb the Betway Premiership table.

At the time of publishing, neither Orlando Pirates nor Durban City had issued official comments on the matter, but with the transfer window in full swing, a resolution is expected soon. If the deal goes through, Kimvuidi’s return could prove to be a win-win for both player and club.
