Kegan Johannes Delighted with Mamelodi Sundowns Debut After Injury Struggles
Kegan Johannes was overjoyed to make his long-awaited debut for Mamelodi Sundowns after overcoming injury setbacks that had kept him sidelined since his arrival from SuperSport United. The 24-year-old defender played a crucial role in Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Sibanye Golden Stars in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday, securing the Brazilians’ place in the competition’s last 16.
Johannes, who had struggled with match fitness since his move, was thrilled to finally complete a full 90 minutes for his new team. Speaking after the game, the South African junior international reflected on his performance, describing it as a significant stepping stone in his career.
A Tough but Promising Debut
The debut match proved to be a challenging one for Johannes, as he had to fight through fitness concerns to contribute to his team’s victory. Despite these initial struggles, the defender was pleased with how he handled the match. “In my first 90, it was a tough one, obviously with conditioning and all of that, but yeah, we got through it,” Johannes shared on Mamelodi Sundowns TV.
He also expressed his commitment to improving, stating that he rewatched the match to assess areas where he could enhance his game. “I think overall the game was quite good for myself and obviously for the team as well,” he continued. “We obviously through to the next round, and I think, yeah, good 90 minutes. I think for myself, that was a building block, so from now on onwards, obviously we build from that.”
Sundowns’ Professional Approach to a Tough Game
Johannes also praised his team’s professional approach to a match against an unknown opponent. Despite allowing Golden Stars to get back into the game towards the end, Sundowns showed their quality and managed to secure the win. “It was a tough game for us. Obviously, we didn’t know what to expect about the opponent, but we had to take the game professionally and give it our best,” Johannes added.
The defender emphasized the importance of showing the team’s class, especially when under pressure. “We allowed them to get into the game a bit towards the end, but obviously, we had to show our quality and just show that we are Mamelodi Sundowns and we can do well.”
A Competitive Position Battle Ahead
Johannes’ versatility as both a centre-back and right-back provides coach Miguel Cardoso with several options in defense, but it also places him in direct competition with established players in both positions. At right-back, Johannes faces stiff competition from Bafana Bafana internationals Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena. Meanwhile, in central defense, he will need to contend with established figures like Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala.
The young defender’s debut gives him a solid foundation, but he will need to show consistent improvement and standout performances in order to secure a more regular spot in the starting lineup. His commitment to personal growth and his ability to learn from his experiences could make him a valuable asset for Sundowns as the season progresses.
Looking Ahead for Sundowns and Johannes
With his debut behind him, Johannes will be eager to push on and establish himself as a regular in Sundowns’ squad. The Brazilians are currently performing well in the league, and Johannes will need to maintain a high level of performance to catch the eye of coach Cardoso.
Sundowns’ next challenge is a league match against Lamontville Golden Arrows on February 2, 2025, as they look to extend their unbeaten run and increase their lead at the top of the table. Johannes will be hoping to continue building on his first 90 minutes for the club, while Sundowns fans are excited to see how the young defender develops within one of South Africa’s most successful teams.
As Johannes continues to improve and adapt to Sundowns’ demanding playing style, the future looks promising for both him and the club.
