Khalil Ben Youssef Addresses Fan Reactions to Kaizer Chiefs’ Team Selections

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has addressed the mixed reactions from supporters over the club’s starting lineup choices. Despite Amakhosi enjoying a run of positive results with a seemingly settled squad, Ben Youssef and fellow co-coach Cedric Kaze occasionally rotate players to manage workload and tactical needs. The decisions, however, have drawn criticism from fans who either question the rotations or complain when the same squad is maintained. Ben Youssef admitted confusion over the contrasting feedback, pointing out that supporters appear unsure of what they actually want.

The Tunisian tactician explained that the team faces a demanding schedule, particularly after a long break of one and a half months, followed by fixtures every three days. All recent games were away matches, requiring extensive travel and careful load management. “Coming from a long break, like one month and a half without a game, and then a crazy fixture schedule, playing every three days. All the games were away games, so we had to travel and manage the load,” Ben Youssef said. He emphasized that player rotation is part of maintaining fitness, preventing injuries, and keeping the squad competitive across all competitions.

Ben Youssef also detailed the reasoning behind occasional omissions of key midfielders Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu. The pair has formed a strong partnership in recent matches, providing stability and technical quality, but the coaching team must sometimes rest them due to the high physical demands placed on midfielders. “We changed Maboe or Ndlovu just to manage them, because there was a big risk of injury for them. So, we had to manage their load,” he explained. Midfielders cover the most ground during games, often performing repeated sprints, making their physical management critical for sustained performance.

He further highlighted the depth in Chiefs’ squad, noting that different midfielders bring varied qualities to the team. While Maboe and Ndlovu offer technical stability, other players contribute more physical strength depending on the opposition and tactical approach. Each match is assessed individually, and rotations are made to optimize performance while reducing injury risk. Ben Youssef stressed that the coaching team’s priority is balancing physical load, technical quality, and opposition challenges to maintain consistent results throughout the season.

With Kaizer Chiefs competing on multiple fronts, understanding and managing player workloads is vital. Ben Youssef’s explanation underlines the importance of strategic rotation and squad management rather than simply following fan expectations. By rotating players thoughtfully and responding to fixture demands, Chiefs aim to preserve fitness, avoid injuries, and ensure the team remains competitive in the Premier Soccer League and continental competitions.
