Bafana Bafana defeated Liberia in their AFCON Qualifier last night. Head coach Hugo Broos has made a bold statement about their chances in next year’s tournament.

The Belgian is not one to mince his words and has continued to make headlines with his sometimes-abrasive comments. When the qualification campaign began last year, he boldly stated, ‘kill me if we don’t make it to AFCON.’

He has achieved this mission, with one match to spare against the highest ranked African side, Morocco.

Now, with the competition set to kick off in Ivory Coast next January, Broos has stated that if Bafana Bafana don’t make it through the group stages, he can be proverbially ‘killed’ by the nation.

“This is a country which should normally always be at AFCON. I didn’t understand why it didn’t go in the previous year’s [2022 AFCON].” Broos spoke, after the crucial victory.

“So, this was very important, we have a new team. We have a young team. International games are very important to have the international experience.

“Also, going to the biggest tournament in Africa. So, we did it now and we can only progress in the next months with opponents where we can learn something and be ready for AFCON.

“I will say what I said last time, ‘you can kill me if we don’t make it to AFCON’, well you can kill me if we don’t make it through the group stages [of AFCON] next year.” He stated.
