Former Orlando Pirates Captain Benson Mhlongo Backs 19-Year-Old Mbekezeli Mbokazi as Club’s Future Leader

Former Orlando Pirates skipper Benson Mhlongo has thrown his full support behind the club’s decision to appoint 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi as captain during recent pre-season friendlies in Spain. Speaking exclusively to KickOff, Mhlongo sees this bold move as a clear indication of Pirates’ long-term vision focused on youth development and leadership renewal.
Mbokazi, who previously captained the Buccaneers’ Developmental Division Challenge (DDC) team, was handed the captain’s armband during the Spain tour as the club prepares for the 2025/26 season. This decision reflects a growing trust in the youngster’s leadership qualities despite his tender age.
“You give the armband to someone the technical team and the leadership understand better,” Mhlongo said. “Being a captain doesn’t depend on age. I became captain at Wits just six months after joining, at the age of 22.”
The former defender added that the key for Mbokazi will be managing expectations and focusing on performance rather than external pressure. “For me, it’s not an issue if Mbokazi becomes permanent captain, as long as it doesn’t overwhelm him. It should be a recognition of his potential and a source of motivation. He shouldn’t worry about the talk; he should focus on his performance, and everything will fall into place. I don’t see anything wrong with him being appointed captain; he is right for the job.”
Mhlongo also highlighted that Orlando Pirates is currently navigating a transitional phase, building a youthful squad where Mbokazi will be leading players close to his own age. “Most of the senior players at Pirates right now are devoid of egos, which will make it easier for him to lead if he is made captain,” he noted.
He further stressed that the club’s youth project is steadily progressing. “It’s evident that Pirates is fostering a new generation of players. Although this project is not yet complete, it is coming together. The club has previously succeeded with players like Dukuduku Makhanya and Tso Vilakazi. Dukuduku is still around and understands Mbokazi well. He will have a significant influence in helping these young players grow.”
Mhlongo’s backing of Mbokazi as captain signals a strategic shift by Orlando Pirates towards youth leadership — a move aimed at harnessing fresh energy and responsibility among the club’s rising stars. With this approach, Pirates hope to build a resilient team ready to compete at the highest levels in the seasons ahead.
