The Last 10 African Player Of The Year Till Present
The much contested accolade to honor African male footballers is always tough to predict. But some great footballers have came of the continent and represented African exceptionally well and won the top award, the African player of the year. Below is a list of the last ten winners of the top award.
- In 2007, Frederic Kanoute from Mali and playing for Sevilla in Spain won the award, beating Michael Essien from Ghana and Didier Drogba from Ivory Coast.
- In 2008, Emmanuel Adebayor, playing for Arsenal and banging in goals for Gunners, won the award. He was the favorite against Mohamed Abotrika from Egypt and Michael Essien from Ghana.
- Didier Drogba, took the accolade in 2009 playing for Chelsea , beating Samuel Eto from Cameroon and Michael Essien from Ghana.
- In 2010, Samuel Eto, won the award playing for Internazionale in Italy. Eto beat Asamoah Gyan from Ghana and Didier Drogba from Ivory Coast.
- Yaya Toure, won the award consecutively from 2011 to 2014, playing for Manchester City and Ivory Coast.
- Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, won the African Player of the Year in 2015, playing for Borussia Dotmund in Germany and his home country Gabon.
- In 2016, Riyard Mahrez playing for English League Champions 2015/16 season, Leicester City won the award. He also represented his home country Algeria very well. Mahrez beat Sadio Mane from Senegal and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Gabon.
