10 Things You Don’t Know About Collins Mbesuma

Collins Mbesuma even at the age of 33 still continues to strike and punish opponents. A Zambian international who graced South Africa in 2004 and was known from his first match for Kaizer Chiefs. Now he is playing for Highlands Park and hasn’t been lucky but he is a great contributor to the team. These are 10 things you don’t know about Mbesuma.

  1. Mbesuma was born in Luanshya. His father, Francis Kajiya, was also a football player who played as a midfielder for Zambian clubs; Green Buffaloes FC and Ndola United FC  as well as the country’s national team from the late 1970s to the early 1980s.
  2. The surname “Mbesuma” is adopted from his step father who raised him as he was not brought up by his biological father Kajiya.
  3. Mbesuma made his debut for Zambia in 2003 and had won four caps by the end of that year, while at the same time being a key member of Zambia’s under-23 side that almost qualified for the Athens Olympics.
  4. His performances for the Olympic team caught the attention of Kaizer Chiefs who bought him in January from Roan United in Zambia, where he averaged a goal every other game.
  5. He scored on his debut in South Africa’s PSL in 2004 against Black Leopards but injured himself in the process and spent several weeks on the sidelines.
  6. Mbesuma was named PSL Player of the Season in 2005 after scoring a sensational 35 goals in one season with Kaizer Chiefs.
  7. In 2005 and 2016 Mbesuma won the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot, for most goals in the PSL.
  8. While at Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates is the only side that he never scored against.
  9. Mbesuma won AFCON Championship with Zambia in 2012.
  10. Mbesuma in South Africa played for Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows, Orlando Pirates, Mpumalanga Black Aces and currently for Highlands Park.
