Ouaddou Hails Pirates’ Ironclad Defence as Key to Title Ambitions

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised his team’s defensive organisation and collective discipline following a 2-0 victory over Chippa United at Orlando Stadium. The win lifted Pirates level on points with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the Betway Premiership table, with a game in hand, and reinforced their status as serious title contenders this season.
The Soweto giants have been in dominant form, winning eight of their last nine league matches while keeping seven clean sheets. Their success has been built on structure, clarity and relentless effort rather than reliance on individual brilliance. Ouaddou highlighted the collective nature of their defensive approach.
“I think it’s very important to have a game model in the defensive animation. You have to give the ideas to the players, how you want to defend. We don’t defend with two or three players, or even just the back four. For me, defending is an art. It’s very important to know where, when and how we want to recover the ball,” Ouaddou said.
He added that unity and understanding across the squad have been key to their defensive strength. “As long as my 11 players, or let’s say my 20 players, are able to answer that question in the same moment, it means they understand exactly what I want. We are strong defensively because we think the same thing at the same time.”
Ouaddou credited his players’ effort and team spirit for the remarkable defensive record this season. “Inside our team block, everybody is working and giving effort. If we have one or two players that leave us down, it can be difficult. I have to congratulate them since the beginning of the season. These guys were very brave, fantastic team spirit. That’s why it’s very difficult to score a goal,” he said.
Pirates’ recent results underline their defensive philosophy. In nine league games, they have recorded eight wins, scored 15 goals and conceded only two. Their victories include tight wins over Stellenbosch (1-0), Orbit College (1-0), Siwelele FC (1-0), TS Galaxy (2-0) and Polokwane City (1-0), along with a 3-0 win over Chippa United and a 3-1 victory against Golden Arrows. Their only league setback in this period was a 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ouaddou’s philosophy combines organisation, effort and synchronisation across the pitch. By emphasising a shared understanding of defensive duties, Pirates have made it difficult for opponents to break through. The team’s cohesion and discipline have transformed them into one of the league’s toughest sides to score against.
With momentum building and confidence high, Pirates are well positioned to continue their challenge for the Premiership title. If Ouaddou’s defensive “art” remains effective, the Soweto giants are likely to remain a formidable force in the months ahead.
