Lucas Ribeiro Urges Sundowns to Stay True to Their Style Ahead of Crucial Club World Cup Clash with Fluminense

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro has emphasized the importance of sticking to their trademark style of play as the Premier Soccer League champions prepare for a high-stakes FIFA Club World Cup encounter against Brazilian giants Fluminense.

The two teams will meet on Wednesday in a do-or-die Group F fixture. For Sundowns, only a win will secure progression to the Round of 16, while Fluminense need just a draw to advance.

Speaking ahead of the crucial match, Ribeiro, who has been one of Masandawana’s standout performers this season, stressed that playing with confidence and maintaining their South African football identity is key.

“For me, it’s a special game; it’s the first time playing against this team from Brazil,” Ribeiro told iDiski Times. “We’re playing to win—it will be a very difficult game, just like the one against Dortmund.”

Despite the pressure of the occasion, Ribeiro noted that the mood within the Sundowns camp remains calm and focused. “The team is relaxed; there isn’t too much pressure in their minds. The level is very high here, but the players are very focused for this game,” he said.

Ribeiro also highlighted the need for Sundowns to continue playing the style that brought them success in the PSL. “For me, the most important thing is we play exactly as we play in South Africa. We didn’t come here to change—we play our game, you see? I’m very happy with my team,” he added.

The Brazilian forward played a key role in Sundowns’ narrow 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund in their opening match. He opened the scoring with a brilliant individual effort and later assisted Iqraam Rayners for another goal. Despite the defeat, Sundowns earned praise for their fearless performance against the UEFA Champions League finalists.

“I have confidence at all times,” Ribeiro said. “But I don’t speak about myself, I speak about the group. We played very well and fought together.”

Sundowns now carry the hopes of the African continent after fellow CAF representatives Esperance, Wydad Casablanca, and Al Ahly were all eliminated from the competition. A win against Fluminense would see Masandawana leapfrog the Copa Libertadores champions and secure a spot in the knockout stages.

Drawing inspiration from their strong showing against Dortmund, Sundowns will look to capitalize on any weaknesses in the Brazilian side’s defense. The team will need to show the same intensity and attacking bravery they displayed in their opening fixture.

Lucas Ribeiro is expected to lead Sundowns’ attack once again at the Hard Rock Stadium. Simultaneously, Group F’s other fixture will see Borussia Dortmund face Ulsan Hyundai at TQL Stadium. For Sundowns, this is more than just a match—it’s an opportunity to make history at the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. A victory would not only secure their place in the Round of 16 but also reinforce their reputation as one of Africa’s most ambitious and competitive clubs on the global stage.
