Lucky Lekgwathi Hopes for All-South African CAF Champions League Final

As the CAF Champions League quarterfinal draw looms, former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi has weighed in on the possibility of the Buccaneers meeting Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round. With both South African sides making it to the knockout stages, Lekgwathi expressed his desire to see them avoid each other until later in the tournament, ideally the semi-finals or final.

Pirates’ Strong Group Stage Performance

Orlando Pirates impressed during the group stages, finishing as winners of their group, which included continental giants Al Ahly. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, the other South African representative, finished second in their group behind AS FAR Rabat, setting up the possibility of an all-South African clash in the quarterfinals.

Reflecting on Pirates’ journey so far, Lekgwathi said:
“They played against Al Ahly, they beat them. Sundowns are there, we’re there, we can win it. Looking at the history of the team, we’ve reached finals and semi-finals before. They have a big chance of bringing the trophy home.”

Avoiding Sundowns Early

Lekgwathi, affectionately known as “Phinda Mzala” by fans, is rooting for both South African teams to go far in the tournament. He shared his hopes for an all-South African final, noting:
“I just pray that they must not play each other now. At least in the semi-final or final, it would be great to see two South African teams battle it out for the title.”

Confidence in Jose Riveiro

The former Bucs skipper believes Orlando Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro, holds the key to their success. Highlighting Riveiro’s impressive record in cup competitions, Lekgwathi said:
“Looking at our coach, he knows how to win a trophy. Last year, he learned his lesson in the Champions League. This season, they mean business.”

He praised the team’s humility despite their recent successes, adding:
“They are so humble. They beat Al Ahly and Kaizer Chiefs but remain grounded. They must stick to the plan and deliver. I have confidence they will do well.”

What Lies Ahead

The draw, scheduled for February 20, will determine whether Pirates and Sundowns meet early or have the chance to forge separate paths to the final. While Lekgwathi is optimistic about Pirates’ chances, he acknowledges the challenge posed by Sundowns and other continental powerhouses.

For South African football fans, the prospect of two local giants competing for the CAF Champions League title is an exciting one. Both teams now await their quarterfinal fate, knowing the road to glory will be anything but easy.
