Bafana Bafana plays against France in an international friendly tomorrow night. Left back Lyle Lakay is very pleased to be with the national team.
Lylo has been selected by Hugo Broos for the very first time at Bafana Bafana. The last time Lakay played any international football, the makeup of the team was very different.
The new technical staff has completely rejuvenated the team with the inclusions of very youthful players. Players which Lakay has not played with at national level.
“It’s always a great feeling to represent your country.” Lakay told the Mamelodi Sundowns media.
“It’s every footballer’s dream to represent their country and also it’s been a while since I’ve been in the National team. It’s good to be back.
“I always told myself that if I am [selected] I’ll be happy and even if I wasn’t selected it’s also not the end of the world. I just have to continue working hard and keep on trying to make the next squad whenever there’s qualifiers or friendly games.
“It’s a different squad compared to when I was last there. It’s Ronwen [Williams], Keagan [Dolly], I think it’s the two of them that were there in the previous camp when I was there.
“I’ve been with Ronwen at the SuperSport United Academy. We’ve played together before and obviously my teammates that will also be there – Rushine [De Reuck], [Khuliso] Mudau, Mothobi [Mvala], [Teboho Mokoena] Tebza and Thapelo [Morena] that are all there.” He added.
South Africa has taken on France on two previous occasions. Both occasions were at the FIFA World Cup.
The first was in 1998 when France were the tournament hosts. They won 3-0 against the tournament debutants.
The second time was in 2010, when South Africa hosted. Bafana Bafana ran out 2-1 victors.
