Sergio Ramos spent 16 years with Real Madrid. In this time, he notched up 671 appearances, 101 goals, 40 assists and a staggering 22 trophies.
The 35 year olds contract will come to an end at the end of June. This is after himself and the club failed to agree on a contract extension, since beginning talks in 2019.
“I would like to say that I never wanted to leave Real Madrid. I always wanted to stay here.” Ramos told the media in a virtual conference.
Real Madrid offered Ramos a 1 year contract extension with a 10% pay cut. However Sergio and his agent brother René wanted a 2 year contract.
They delayed the negotiation process until Real Madrid told him that there is no longer any contract extension on offer.
“No one told me there was a best before date. I thought it was part of a negotiation like many others.
“I don’t know why there’s a best before date without notifying me. Maybe I misunderstood but I didn’t know.
“I was surprised. They told me there is no longer an offer.
“They said: ‘it’s over.’”
Sergio Ramos took to his Instagram to pay his final farewell to a club he served so well over a 16 year period.
“I never thought this day would come, but everything has a beginning and an end. Today, I say goodbye to my home, my supporters, my teammates, this shirt for which I have given everything and to which I have given my heart and soul.
“Today I say goodbye to Real Madrid. I cannot express with words the gratitude and pride I feel when I look back on this journey that has lasted 16 years.
“I leave with 22 titles engraved in my memory in the form of irreplaceable and indescribable emotions. Thank you to the club and to my teammates and my coaches.
“And thank you, especially, to you; the Madridistas. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all of you who made it possible and accompanied me on this incredible journey.
