Makhehlene Makhaula Set to Extend Stay at Orlando Pirates After Stellar Season

Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula is set to continue his journey with the club for another season, following a campaign that highlighted his value as a midfield general and experienced leader.
Makhaula, who joined the Buccaneers in January 2022, has now been with the Soweto giants for 30 months. Despite turning 35 during the previous season, the veteran midfielder showed no signs of slowing down. He featured in an impressive 44 matches across competitions, often serving as the anchor in midfield and providing crucial balance to the team both on and off the ball.
His contribution has not gone unnoticed. Club insiders have confirmed that Makhaula will be staying on for at least one more season, taking him past his 36th birthday while still donning the black and white jersey.
Although he concluded the 2024/25 campaign sidelined due to injury, Makhaula is expected to return for pre-season training at the end of June. His recovery is progressing well, and the technical team remains confident that he will be fit and ready when the new season begins.
Makhaula’s rise in South African football has been nothing short of inspirational. Over a decade ago, he was employed as a cleaner with the BOSASA Group at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp. His football journey truly began when he moved from amateur outfit Trabzon FC to Free State Stars in 2014. Since then, he has built a career defined by grit, professionalism, and unwavering determination.
During his 30s, Makhaula has enjoyed some of his best football, representing Highlands Park, AmaZulu FC, and now Orlando Pirates. His experience and work ethic have made him a key figure in the squad, especially in high-stakes encounters where calm heads and tactical discipline are essential.
The club is also investing in its future, with young talent like Simphiwe Selepe being introduced in central midfield. In addition, Goodman Mosele remains eager to prove his consistency and reclaim a regular spot in the starting lineup. However, Makhaula’s leadership and tactical nous are seen as vital in mentoring the next generation while maintaining stability in the squad.
As Pirates gear up for another busy season, having a seasoned campaigner like Makhaula in the mix could prove crucial. His contract extension is not just a reward for past performances but a strategic move to retain experience and continuity in a squad brimming with potential.
