Mamelodi Sundowns Appoint Miguel Cardoso as New Head Coach

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced Miguel Cardoso as their new head coach, marking a significant change in their technical team setup. This appointment comes ahead of a crucial CAF Champions League clash against Morocco’s Raja Athletic Club on Sunday. Cardoso replaces Manqoba Mngqithi, whose departure reflects the club’s ambitions for better results both domestically and on the continental stage.

Why Miguel Cardoso?

The 51-year-old Portuguese tactician brings extensive European coaching experience to Chloorkop. Known for his tactical acumen, Cardoso has managed several European teams, including Rio Ave and Nantes, and is expected to inject fresh energy into Sundowns’ CAF Champions League campaign and Betway Premiership title defense.

Aitor Karanka Considered

While Sundowns ultimately settled on Cardoso, it has been revealed that Spanish coach Aitor Karanka was also under consideration. The former Middlesbrough and Birmingham City manager, who once served as assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, had his CV forwarded to Sundowns by South African-based representatives.

“Aitor Karanka was one of the candidates approached as the club evaluated options for replacing Mngqithi,” a source confirmed. “His experience was attractive, but the club decided to go with Cardoso to meet their current objectives.”

Karanka, who is currently unattached after leaving Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, remains a respected figure in European football, but his pursuit of the Sundowns job ends with Cardoso’s appointment.

A New Chapter for Sundowns

Cardoso inherits a team brimming with talent but under pressure to deliver in Africa’s most prestigious club competition. Despite their domestic dominance, the Brazilians have faced criticism for their inability to consistently challenge for CAF Champions League honors.

The decision to bring in Cardoso highlights Sundowns’ commitment to evolving their playing style and addressing shortcomings that have hampered their progress on the continental stage.

Mngqithi’s Future

Mngqithi, who played a key role in Sundowns’ recent success, departs following a series of mixed results. With Golden Arrows reportedly interested in reuniting with their former coach, speculation about his next move is already underway.

Miguel Cardoso’s first test comes this Sunday when Sundowns face Raja Athletic Club in what promises to be a thrilling CAF Champions League encounter. Fans will be watching closely to see how the Portuguese tactician adapts to his new environment and whether he can guide the Brazilians to glory both at home and abroad.
