Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Miguel Cardoso Explains Why Themba Zwane Was Dropped Against Chippa United

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on his decision to leave captain Themba Zwane out of the squad that defeated Chippa United 3-0 in a Premier Soccer League fixture at Buffalo City Stadium on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old Zwane is in the process of recovering from a serious Achilles injury he sustained in October 2024, which sidelined him for six months. While he has returned to action, the Portuguese tactician has taken a cautious approach with his midfield maestro, carefully managing his minutes as he regains full match fitness.

Cardoso explained that the decision not to play Zwane was influenced by the condition of the pitch in East London. “Chippa United were kind enough to allow us a short training session at Buffalo City Stadium. The surface had a lot of sand and wasn’t ideal for someone coming back from a major injury,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV.

“You know Themba is returning from an Achilles injury, and those can be very tricky. Playing on a pitch like that could have been a risk. As much as he wanted to contribute, my job is to protect my players—especially key figures like him.”

Since his return in April, Zwane has featured six times across the PSL and CAF Champions League, all as a substitute. Cardoso has resisted the urge to rush him back into the starting XI, knowing the veteran playmaker will be instrumental in the upcoming fixtures.

Sundowns are preparing for a demanding schedule that includes the two-legged CAF Champions League final and participation in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in June. With high-stakes matches on the horizon, the club is prioritizing the health and readiness of experienced players like Zwane.

Despite missing the midweek clash, Zwane remains a central figure in Sundowns’ plans. His leadership and technical ability will be vital as Masandawana look to cap off an already historic season with continental glory and a strong showing on the global stage.

Sundowns will conclude their domestic campaign with a home fixture against Magesi FC on Sunday. With the league title already secured, Cardoso may opt to rest key players once again and maintain his strategic approach heading into the crucial final stretch of the season.
