Mamelodi Sundowns Confirm Departure of Neo Maema as Squad Trim Continues

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that midfielder Neo Maema has left the club as part of their ongoing squad reduction. Coach Miguel Cardoso recently stated that the Brazilians would trim their roster ahead of the new season, and Maema’s exit follows those of Matias Esquivel and Thembinkosi Lorch earlier this week.
The 28-year-old is currently captaining South Africa’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad in a tournament co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. He will join a new club after the competition, with Tanzanian giants Simba SC strongly linked to securing his services. Maema has also attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the past.
Since arriving from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021, Maema enjoyed a successful spell at Chloorkop. He won four DStv Premiership titles, the Nedbank Cup, the MTN8, and the African Football League. Over his 120 appearances, he scored 13 goals and provided 14 assists, establishing himself as a reliable contributor in midfield.
However, game time became limited following the departure of coach Rulani Mokwena. The increased competition for places left Maema on the fringes, prompting him to seek regular football elsewhere.
Sundowns’ restructuring has been extensive. Along with Maema, the club has parted ways with Rivaldo Coetzee, Sipho Mbule, Sanele Tshabalala, Lebohang Maboe, Thabang Sibanyoni, Sifiso Ngobeni, Rushine de Reuck and Lucas Suarez. Kobamelo Kodisang has been sent out on loan.
Maema’s next move is expected to be confirmed soon, and a switch to Simba SC would keep him active in continental football. For the player, this represents a chance to restart his career and return to regular first-team action. For Sundowns, it signals a continued commitment to refining their squad for the challenges ahead.
