Mamelodi Sundowns Goalkeeping Conundrum Casts Doubt Over Ricardo Goss’ Future

Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for the new season with clarity in some departments and uncertainty in others. One such area is the goalkeeping unit, where the futures of Denis Onyango and Jody February have been confirmed, but Ricardo Goss now finds himself in limbo once again.
Goss has spent the last three seasons on loan at SuperSport United, where he has been a regular presence between the posts. However, with Sundowns confirming veteran Onyango will remain at Chloorkop for another season and exercising the extension in February’s contract, the options ahead of Goss appear increasingly limited.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper now faces the possibility of returning to a Sundowns side where competition for the number one jersey is intense. With Ronwen Williams firmly established as the undisputed starter and other goalkeepers already within the squad, Goss’ prospects for game time at Chloorkop are uncertain at best.
To complicate matters, reports have emerged that SuperSport United might be sold to a consortium aiming to revive Bloemfontein Celtic. This potential change in ownership adds another layer of unpredictability for Goss, who is also eyeing a spot in the Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
SuperSport United have reportedly shown interest in retaining Goss beyond his loan spell, particularly if the club remains stable and unsold. But if a sale goes through, Goss may be forced to consider other options to maintain his standing at national level.
Previously, Goss has been candid about his hesitation to return to Sundowns, citing the crowded goalkeeping department as a significant concern. With five goalkeepers potentially on the books for next season, including Williams, Onyango, February, and two promising youngsters, his chances of consistent minutes are slim.
In what was a challenging campaign for SuperSport, Goss still managed to feature in 18 matches, keeping four clean sheets along the way. Despite the team’s overall struggles, he showed glimpses of the form that earned him a national call-up, and he remains a goalkeeper capable of performing at the highest level—if given the platform.
With the transfer window approaching, Ricardo Goss faces a defining moment in his career. Whether he stays with Sundowns to fight for a place, returns to SuperSport if circumstances allow, or seeks a fresh start elsewhere, the next move will be critical in shaping his immediate future—both at club and international level.
