Mamelodi Sundowns’ Historic Eighth Consecutive League Title Comes With Rare Milestone

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially sealed their eighth consecutive DStv Premiership title—and this time, they’ve added a rare and prestigious achievement to the milestone. Following a commanding 3-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night, the Brazilians not only lifted the league trophy once again but did so with a level of dominance that is seldom seen in South African football.

This latest victory saw Sundowns hit 57 goals for the season, the highest tally in a single campaign since the Premier Soccer League was trimmed to 16 teams in the 2002/03 season. With the league’s top attack, they sit comfortably at the summit of the scoring charts, showing the kind of offensive prowess that has become a hallmark of their sustained success.

A Clean Sweep Against All Opposition

What makes this year’s triumph even more exceptional is that Sundowns have now defeated every other team in the league at least once this season. Chippa United were the final side to fall, joining a list that includes top-flight heavyweights such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Cape Town City.

In total, the Tshwane giants have claimed victories over:

  • Cape Town City (twice)
  • Kaizer Chiefs (twice)
  • Richards Bay FC (twice)
  • Sekhukhune United (twice)
  • Marumo Gallants (twice)
  • SuperSport United (twice)
  • TS Galaxy
  • Orlando Pirates
  • Golden Arrows
  • Magesi FC
  • AmaZulu FC
  • Stellenbosch FC
  • Polokwane City
  • Chippa United

Such a feat has only been achieved once before by Sundowns—during the 2022/23 season. In the other recent title-winning campaigns, they always had at least one team they couldn’t get the better of. Last season, it was Cape Town City. In 2021/22, Stellenbosch proved stubborn. The year before that, both Moroka Swallows and Golden Arrows held them back. In 2019/20, Baroka FC, Cape Town City, and Pirates all escaped defeat. Even in 2018/19, AmaZulu survived the Sundowns onslaught, while the 2017/18 title came without a win over Kaizer Chiefs.

This year, however, Miguel Cardoso’s side left no stone unturned.

Cardoso’s Impressive Mid-Season Takeover

The clean sweep is all the more impressive considering that head coach Miguel Cardoso only took charge in December. Despite the mid-season entry, the Portuguese tactician has collected points against every league opponent bar one—Polokwane City. Notably, both fixtures against the Limpopo-based side were played before Cardoso’s appointment.

Speaking after the Chippa United win, Cardoso praised his players for their commitment and consistency under pressure.

“It means the boys have a big commitment and big belief and strong attitude towards the objectives that we have,” Cardoso said.

“It makes my job easier. It gives me a little bit of peace despite the stress of playing matches in such a short period of time.”

A New Standard in South African Football

Sundowns’ dominance is now redefining what excellence looks like in the DStv Premiership. With unmatched consistency, superior squad depth, and tactical flexibility, they have raised the bar for what it takes to be champions in South Africa. Their eighth straight title not only solidifies their place in history but does so in a fashion that speaks to their relentless ambition.

As the final games of the season wrap up, one thing is clear: Mamelodi Sundowns are not just winning—they are doing it with authority, style, and a hunger that shows no sign of slowing down.
