Mamelodi Sundowns Lead Race to Sign Bafana Bafana Defender

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly leading the race to sign Bafana Bafana defender Thabang Matuludi during the current transfer window. The Tshwane giants have already bolstered their squad this January with the arrivals of Monnapule Saleng, Khulumani Ndamane, and Brayan León, and are now focused on strengthening their defensive options.

Matuludi, 26, currently plays for Polokwane City, and his contract is set to expire in June this year. However, the player has a one-year extension option valid until 2027, making negotiations a priority for Sundowns. According to sources, the club has already made a formal offer to Polokwane City for his services. “Sundowns have submitted the offer to Polokwane City. It was two days ago,” the source revealed.

Securing Matuludi could have implications for current Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau, whose contract also expires in June. The potential arrival of Matuludi may signal a shift in the team’s defensive lineup. Matuludi has also been linked in recent days with a possible move to Orlando Pirates, adding intrigue to his next destination.

Sundowns’ pursuit of Matuludi comes amid speculation around other squad members. Peter Shalulile, the Namibian striker, also has a contract expiring in June. Although a reported move to North Africa fell through prior to the season, his future at Chloorkop remains uncertain.

The January window is shaping up to be crucial for Sundowns as they aim to defend their league title and make a deeper run in the CAF Champions League. Adding a Bafana Bafana international like Matuludi would strengthen the squad and provide options for both domestic and continental competitions.
