Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Hlompho Kekana 300 Not Out

Veteran midfielder Hlompho Kekana is a true legend of the game and one of the best captains to ever don the club’s armband and was recently honoured by his club Mamelodi Sundowns with a framed jersey before the league match against Bidvest Wits in a midweek match.

The 34-year-old Limpopo-born midfielder went past the 300-game milestone when he scored the lone strike in Sundowns’ 1-0 win over USM Alger in Algiers in the group stages of the Caf Champions League in December last year.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane hailed his skipper who now has 302 appearances for Sundowns.

The current appearance record holder for Downs is Daniel Mudau, who has 390 caps for the Brazilians.

“I think he is the best captain for me at Sundowns in terms of achievements. I don’t know if there is another captain who has won so many trophies like him” said Mosimane.

Since becoming captain in 2016, the Zebediela-born workhorse has lifted two league titles, the Telkom Knockout (2019), CAF Champions League (2016) and CAF Super Cup (2017).

“He gives everything in every match. He gives the same spirit and the same mentality‚ irrespective of the age that is working against him. He is a true soldier and hopefully we will get somebody in the team who will give us the same and play more than 300 games.”

“He is a true legend‚ we honour him and give him the respect that he deserves. I took the right decision to make him captain and I am happy with my decision‚ I saw it right.” added Mosimane.

Overally, Kekana has played more than 400 domestic matches having represented Black Leopards, Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United as well.
