Mamelodi Sundowns Receive Key Boost Ahead of Kaizer Chiefs Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed a timely boost ahead of their high-profile Betway Premiership encounter against in-form Kaizer Chiefs. The Brazilians are set to welcome back Khuliso Mudau, who has returned to training after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.

Sundowns are aiming to bounce back strongly following their MTN8 semi-final exit at the hands of Orlando Pirates over the weekend. Despite that setback, they remain unbeaten in the league with two wins and a draw from their opening three matches. With their focus now on Chiefs, the return of Mudau could not have come at a better time.

The Bafana Bafana right-back had been absent amid reports of frustration over his contract situation. It was widely reported that Sundowns rejected multiple offers for him, which left the player unsettled. His reintegration into training suggests the matter may have cooled, giving head coach Cardoso another option as he prepares for Wednesday’s clash at FNB Stadium.

Mudau’s return follows a similar situation with striker Peter Shalulile, who also resumed training after his own dispute with the club. However, the Sundowns camp continues to face challenges off the field with several transfer-related issues yet to be resolved.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has taken his case to the FIFA Tribunal in an effort to secure an exit after a move to Qatar SC collapsed. Rising talent Kutlwano Lathlaku has reportedly submitted a transfer request, while winger Thapelo Maseko publicly expressed his frustrations on social media before being recalled to the squad in recent matches.

Despite these distractions, Sundowns remain a formidable side in the PSL. Their defensive stability, bolstered by Mudau’s possible return, could prove vital against an Amakhosi side growing in confidence after a strong start to the season.

It remains to be seen whether Cardoso will select the 2022–23 PSL Defender of the Season on Wednesday night, but his availability provides a significant lift as Sundowns aim to maintain their unbeaten league run. Kick-off against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium is scheduled for 19:30.
