Mamelodi Sundowns Seek Permanent Resolution for Erwin Saavedra’s Contractual Situation
Mamelodi Sundowns are actively working to resolve the ongoing contractual situation involving Bolivian midfielder Erwin Saavedra, whose time at the club has been marred by limited game time and unfulfilled potential.
Saavedra’s Struggles at Sundowns
Since joining The Brazilians, Saavedra has struggled to make a significant impact. The 28-year-old has managed only 450 minutes of game time across all competitions during his stay at Chloorkop, including three appearances this season—one in the DStv Premiership and two starts in the CAF Champions League.
Having returned on loan to his former club Bolivar last season, Saavedra’s latest stint with Sundowns has been far from ideal, raising concerns about the return on the club’s initial investment.
A Permanent Solution in Sight
Sundowns are now focused on finding a permanent resolution to Saavedra’s situation, with selling the player being the preferred option. However, challenges remain, particularly with Bolivian clubs reportedly unwilling to meet Sundowns’ valuation for the midfielder.
The Bolivian transfer window remains open until the end of March, providing an opportunity for clubs such as Bolivar—who are preparing for the 2025 Copa Libertadores—to reignite their interest in Saavedra. However, financial negotiations around a transfer fee could prove a stumbling block.
Contractual Complexity
The challenge for Sundowns lies in Saavedra’s lengthy contract, which extends beyond June 2025. Terminating the deal would come at a significant cost to the club, making a sale the more financially viable option.
The Bolivian occupies one of Sundowns’ five foreign player slots, a valuable resource for the Tshwane giants. Alongside Saavedra, the club currently fields other foreign stars such as Chilean Marcelo Allende and Brazilian duo Arthur de Oliveira Sales and Lucas Ribeiro Costa.
Looking Ahead
While Sundowns continue to dominate domestically and perform well in continental competitions, the Saavedra situation highlights the delicate balancing act clubs face in managing their squad and resources. A resolution—whether through a transfer or another arrangement—will allow the Brazilians to focus on maintaining their status as South Africa’s football powerhouse.
For Saavedra, a move back to Bolivia could offer the opportunity to reignite his career, while Sundowns will aim to minimize their financial losses and optimize their squad composition for the future.
