Mamelodi Sundowns Trigger Contract Extension for Divine Lunga Ahead of Busy 2025/26 Season

Mamelodi Sundowns have exercised the option to extend Divine Lunga’s stay at the club, securing the services of the Zimbabwean international beyond the current season.

Lunga, who first joined the Brazilians from Golden Arrows ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, initially signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year. After limited game time in his debut season at Chloorkop — appearing in just 12 matches — he was loaned back to Arrows for the 2022/23 season.

Upon returning, the versatile left-footed defender agreed to a fresh two-year deal, once again with an optional additional year. With that clause now triggered by Sundowns, Lunga’s current contract will extend from July 1, taking him through to at least mid-2026.

“There is also a possibility of further negotiations for a new contract beyond the triggered option,” a source close to the club revealed, hinting at more long-term plans involving the player nicknamed MacGyver, after the iconic American TV character known for his adaptability — a fitting moniker for the utility player.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence this season, particularly in the CAF Champions League where he featured in nine of Sundowns’ 13 matches, playing a key role in their continental campaign. His tactical flexibility has seen him deployed in several roles: as a left-back, a left-sided central defender, a wing-back, and even further forward on the flank — a role he occupied regularly in his youth days in Bulawayo’s Mpopoma suburb.

Lunga’s retention is seen as a strategic move by the Sundowns hierarchy, especially with the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon. With the Tshwane giants preparing for a jam-packed season featuring local and international commitments, depth and versatility will be essential.

Despite his solid form, Lunga has been excluded from the Zimbabwe Warriors squad set to face Burkina Faso on June 6 and Niger on June 10 in Morocco. The exclusion is reportedly due to the club’s demanding schedule and their focus on preparing for the new season.

Sundowns’ decision to secure Lunga’s future not only adds to their defensive stability but also reflects their ongoing commitment to retaining experienced players who can perform under pressure on the continental and global stages.

As the club prepares for another ambitious season, Divine Lunga looks set to remain a key figure in Rulani Mokwena’s plans — both as a player and a leader in the dressing room.
