Mamelodi Sundowns Victory Overshadowed by Serious Khuliso Mudau Injury

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday night, but the result was overshadowed by a serious injury suffered by Khuliso Mudau. The experienced full-back was forced off on a stretcher shortly before half-time after appearing to suffer an Achilles injury. Mudau’s departure was a major concern for Sundowns, particularly because he remains an important player for both the club and the Bafana Bafana national team. Coach Miguel Cardoso later confirmed that the injury appeared to be serious, adding further concern after an otherwise positive performance from the Brazilians. Sundowns secured the three points through goals from Malibongwe Khoza and Cassius Mailula, but the condition of Mudau will now become a major talking point.

Sundowns started the match strongly and quickly established control against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The Brazilians created pressure through their possession and movement while forcing Gallants to spend long periods defending. Their positive start was rewarded in the 21st minute when Khoza opened the scoring following a corner-kick routine involving Bathusi Aubaas. Sundowns continued to look comfortable for much of the opening half, although their rhythm was disrupted by the injury to Mudau. Zuko Mdunyelwa came on in the 38th minute, allowing Sundowns to maintain their defensive structure while the team adjusted to the unexpected change.

Cardoso acknowledged that Sundowns had started the game particularly well before losing some of their momentum. Speaking to SuperSport after the match, the coach explained that the team had played very well during the opening 25 minutes but had lost some of its cushion as the game developed. He also pointed to the need for some players to continue developing their ability to manage different moments during matches. Despite that challenge, Cardoso was pleased with the way his team responded after the interval. The introduction of fresh players in the second half also gave Sundowns greater ability and capacity to control possession and regain their attacking threat.

The biggest concern from the match, however, was Mudau’s injury. The Bafana Bafana right-back went down without apparent contact during the first half and required medical attention before being carried from the field on a stretcher. Cardoso later confirmed that the club believed Mudau had suffered a very serious Achilles injury. The coach stressed that losing a player of Mudau’s quality would be a major blow to Sundowns and South Africa. Further assessment will be required to determine the full extent of the injury, but the early indication has already raised concerns about his availability for upcoming fixtures.

Cardoso explained that the injury did not appear to result from a tackle or challenge from an opposing player. Instead, Mudau suffered the problem during an action away from the pitch, which made the incident particularly unfortunate. The Sundowns coach initially believed another incident had caused the injury before reviewing the footage and realising that the Achilles problem occurred elsewhere during the sequence. Such injuries can happen without direct contact, making them particularly difficult for teams and players to prevent. For Sundowns, the immediate priority will be to ensure Mudau receives the appropriate medical assessment and treatment before decisions are made about his recovery.

Mudau’s importance to Sundowns makes the injury particularly significant for the club’s season. The full-back has established himself as a key defensive option and has also played an important role in providing width and attacking support from the right side. His experience at both domestic and international level gives Sundowns another dependable option in high-pressure matches. Losing him for an extended period would force Cardoso to adjust his defensive plans and could increase the workload on other members of the squad. The arrival of Mdunyelwa as his replacement against Gallants demonstrated that Sundowns have options, but replacing a player of Mudau’s calibre remains a difficult task.

Despite the setback, Sundowns produced a strong second-half response and eventually secured a comfortable victory. The Brazilians created several opportunities after the restart, including a chance for Cassius Mailula shortly after half-time that was cleared by Sibusiso Ncube. Sundowns continued to apply pressure and their persistence eventually paid off in the 68th minute. Brayan Leon set up Mailula, who produced a composed left-footed finish from inside the penalty area to make it 2-0. The goal continued Mailula’s strong scoring form and gave Sundowns the breathing room they needed to close out the match.

The victory was important for Sundowns because it restored momentum in the early stages of the Betway Premiership campaign. The three points moved the Brazilians onto seven points, putting them level with fellow Big Three clubs Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the standings. The result also handed Sundowns a clean sheet and demonstrated their ability to recover from the disruption caused by Mudau’s injury. Gallants, meanwhile, remained without a win after their opening three league matches and dropped to 16th place. Sundowns will now want to build on the victory while hoping that the injury situation does not significantly weaken their squad.

Cardoso’s comments after the match also highlighted the importance of squad depth as Sundowns prepare for a demanding season. The coach praised the ability of the new players introduced during the second half to help the team regain control of the ball. Themba Zwane, Siyanda Ndlovu and Aubrey Modiba were brought on shortly after the hour mark and provided additional energy to the side. Their involvement helped Sundowns maintain pressure and eventually find the second goal that settled the contest. With injuries an unavoidable part of football, the ability of these squad members to step into important roles could become increasingly valuable.

The injury has also created concern around the Bafana Bafana setup because Mudau is an established international player. His performances for South Africa have made him an important option at right-back, meaning a lengthy absence would leave a significant gap for the national team. The timing of the injury could therefore have implications beyond Sundowns’ domestic campaign. For now, the focus will remain on establishing the precise diagnosis and determining the appropriate recovery programme. Support from Sundowns, the national team and medical professionals will be important as Mudau begins what could potentially be a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Mamelodi Sundowns can take plenty of positives from their 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, but the result will inevitably be remembered alongside the injury to Khuliso Mudau. The Brazilians showed character after losing one of their key players and responded with a controlled second-half performance that produced another goal for Mailula. Cardoso’s confirmation of a suspected serious Achilles injury has nevertheless created uncertainty around one of the club’s most important defenders. Sundowns will now need to balance their title ambitions with the challenge of managing the loss of a key player if the injury is confirmed to be as serious as feared. For Mudau, his recovery will be the immediate priority, while Sundowns will hope their squad depth can help them maintain their strong start to the Betway Premiership season.
