Mamelodi Sundowns Win The 2019/2020 ABSA Premiership Title. This was a memorable season for many a reason. The 2019/2020 season was a prolonged season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s also a season that signalled an end Bidvest Wits as we know it. It also saw an end to ABSA’s relationship with the PSL.
Mamelodi Sundowns curtailed the ABSA reign with their 5th title in 7 years. They also completed the 3-peat, winning their third consecutive title.
The title was won in stunning fashion, as Pitso Mosimane has Baroka F.C to thank for stifling Kaizer Chiefs. The Amakhosi’s draw was the luck Sundowns needed to win the league. Kaizer Chiefs’ superior goal difference meant that all they had to do was win, to seal the title.
Mamelodi Sundowns won the most PSL titles under ABSA’s time with the Premiership. So, this means that Sundowns are the fitting team to close of ABSA’s affiliation with South African football.
Lebogang Maboe’s hattrick secured a 3-0 win for Mamelodi Sundowns over Black Leopards. Lidoda Duvha will now have to fight for their PSL status through the grueling playoffs.
In Braamfontein, at the Bidvest Stadium, Chiefs were unable to get the better of Elvis Chipezeze. Khama Billiat gave Ernst Middendorp’s team a first half lead. All Chiefs had to do was nurture their 1 goal lead.
Baroka equalised in the second half through a set piece. Chiefs struggled to create chances. In all honesty, they didn’t create any clear-cut opportunities. Nurkovic and Billiat were tame upfront, with Manyama failing to assist the duo.
Whereas Sundowns faced no such issues. The reigning champions were sharp, innovative and extremely dynamic in their forward movements. The Brazilians created a plethora of opportunities. Lebogang Maboe found the net three times, ending the season with a hattrick.
In the longest ever PSL season, the best team won the league at the end. Pitso Mosimane was very emotional as Mamelodi Sundowns win the 2019/2020 ABSA Premiership title.
