Mandla Ncikazi Confident in Orlando Pirates’ Mental Strength Ahead of Sekhukhune Clash

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has shared his thoughts on the team’s mindset ahead of their crucial Betway Premiership fixture against Sekhukhune United, following a disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League.

The Buccaneers were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the continental competition last Friday, falling short of reaching the final and leaving their Champions League hopes in tatters. However, attention now swiftly turns to domestic matters, with Sekhukhune United visiting Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.

Pirates currently trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points, making every remaining fixture vital in their pursuit of narrowing the gap. With Sundowns also in action against Richards Bay, any slip-up by the champions could open a window of opportunity—something Ncikazi insists his side is ready to exploit.

Speaking to the club’s media department, Ncikazi expressed confidence that the squad had already mentally moved past their disappointment in continental competition.

“It’s another important final for our team against Sekhukhune,” Ncikazi said. “Fortunately, I think everyone in the team is aware of the importance of the match. I could see that the players were all ready—the past game was past us, and we were looking into the next match against Sekhukhune.”

Ncikazi was clear about what is expected from the team on Wednesday: “Three points will be the only language that we will understand.”

With the Soweto Derby looming on Saturday, where Pirates will face long-time rivals Kaizer Chiefs, a win against Sekhukhune would not only bolster their league position but also serve as a morale booster for one of the most anticipated matches on the South African football calendar.

Head coach Jose Riveiro will be hoping his charges can deliver a strong performance to keep the pressure on Sundowns and maintain their momentum heading into the weekend’s showdown.

Orlando Pirates fans will be watching closely to see if their team can bounce back in style and continue their pursuit of silverware on the domestic front.
