Mandla Ncikazi Speaks on His Future After Stepping in as Orlando Pirates Interim Coach

Orlando Pirates interim head coach Mandla Ncikazi has broken his silence regarding his future with the club following the departure of Jose Riveiro earlier this month.

Ncikazi, who took charge after Riveiro exited to pursue a new coaching challenge — with reports strongly linking him to Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly — has guided the Buccaneers through three matches so far. Under his interim leadership, Pirates drew 1-1 with TS Galaxy, secured a narrow 1-0 win over SuperSport United, and played to another draw against AmaZulu.

While the club’s management has yet to confirm who will be appointed as head coach for the upcoming season, speculation continues to mount over whether Ncikazi or any of the current technical team members will remain in their roles.

Speaking during the post-match press conference following the stalemate with AmaZulu on Saturday, Ncikazi remained humble but realistic about his position.

“Like I said, I’m wired differently,” Ncikazi told reporters.
“I’m working at Pirates. If I’m there, it’s good enough. If I’m not there, and it’s decided, I’m still good enough.”

Ncikazi, who previously led Golden Arrows with distinction, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and support he has received from the club.

“I’m just happy with the contribution that I’m making in the club and being appreciated by the club. As long as it’s still like this, I will always be a servant of this club until told otherwise,” he added.

Riveiro’s unexpected departure in mid-May caught many by surprise, especially after helping Pirates maintain a strong campaign in the DStv Premiership. His expected move to Al Ahly signals a major step in his coaching career, but leaves the Soweto giants at a crossroads regarding their next strategic move.

As fans await an official announcement from the club, the spotlight remains on Ncikazi, who could be in line to continue his tenure — depending on Pirates’ leadership and vision for the future.

In the meantime, Orlando Pirates will close out their season with a clash against Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening at 19:30. All eyes will be on the team’s performance and any signals from the club’s hierarchy about the way forward.
