Manqoba Mngqithi Rues Missed Opportunities Against Chippa United! Mamelodi Sundowns defeated The Chilli Boys 2-1 in the DSTV Premiership yesterday.

The 2-1 score line flattered Chippa United as Sundowns bossed the entire game. Goals from Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile were enough to overcome Augustine Kwem’s equaliser.

The Brazilians’ head coach Manqoba Mngqithi reckons that his side could’ve wrapped the game up had they taken their opportunities.

“I think we made this game more difficult than what it should have been. I think we got far too many one against one situations, credit must also be given to Watenga, I think he played very well,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.

“But when you’re not shrewd, you end up getting a draw or losing a match like this one because to be honest the number of chances we created and at a certain point at half-time I was even worried to be honest because I have seen too many games like this.

“Where first-half you have so many chances and suddenly second-half…we didn’t have a good start and immediately we missed the opportunity on the opposite side [one side] and an opportunity to score was created on the opposite side,” he said.

“So one must say we have to be a little bit more shrewd if we want to take this championship and not give a chance because you know after one goal it’s not yet enough, get the second and third quickly so that we can be able to rest the team.

“Now we ended up having to stretch the team the whole way knowing very well that we still have another game on Thursday but nonetheless, congratulations to the boys, congratulations to the coaches, congratulations to everybody within the team because everybody worked very hard for the result,” he added.

“Chippa is not going to be easy for anyone, they’ve got a very good team, the fact that they’ve lost five against Maritzburg must never fool you, if you look at that game and how many chances they missed in that game, Eva Nga, Kwem, they had so many good opportunities and the game could’ve turned out differently.

“I just appreciate that we’ve gone past, not many people will come here and go past easily, at this stage of the season, every game is important and we’re happy to go home with the three points.

“It is always our plan at times to defend with the ball, we always have to be smarter but for you to defend with the ball also make sure that you get at least a second because when it’s edgy the anxiety levels will also be high and you’re likely to make stupid mistakes because you think ‘If we make one mistake here, these people score we’re back [to square one]’.

“But when you’ve scored the second, we’ve done that in other games very successfully, where we play first station passes, not moving, we’re playing within the range and nobody is moving, we receive and pass, receive and pass.

“Intentionally to defend with the ball because the opponent can never score when the ball is ours but it also backfires from time to time when you have one goal, against Black Leopards we did that very well but in the dying stages of the match what happened?

“So you don’t want that, against Mazembe it was one of our best performances in terms of defending with the ball but again it was a 1-0 performance and they did get a chance in those moments and one chance they got could have easily let to a bigger fight towards the end of the group stages but truth be told the boys worked very hard and we appreciate that but we can do more in terms of our finishing, I don’t think we’re clinical enough.” He concluded.
