Marumo Gallants Eye Golden Boot Winner Thatayaone Kgamanyane Amid Transfer Tug-of-War

Marumo Gallants are reportedly in hot pursuit of Botswana’s in-form forward Thatayaone Kgamanyane, but face a financial hurdle as negotiations with his club, Gaborone United, continue to stall over transfer fees.

The 29-year-old attacker, who previously had a short spell in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) with Chippa United, has reignited interest in South Africa after a stellar season in the Botswana Premier League. Kgamanyane finished the 2024/25 campaign as co-winner of the league’s Golden Boot, netting 15 goals and establishing himself as one of the most lethal forwards in the region.

Gallants, who are looking to bolster their attack for the upcoming season, have identified Kgamanyane as a top target. However, reports from Botswana suggest that the club will need to dig deeper into their pockets if they hope to seal the deal. Gaborone United are believed to be holding out for a valuation that reflects the player’s status and contribution.

“Discussions have already started,” a source in Botswana confirmed, “but Gaborone United are reluctant to let go of one of their prized assets without receiving what they believe is a fair offer.”

Kgamanyane is no stranger to South African football. He joined Chippa United in 2018 from Gaborone United but returned to Botswana just six months later after struggling to make an impact in Gqeberha. Since then, the versatile attacking midfielder has matured and flourished, making him a more attractive prospect to PSL clubs.

While Marumo Gallants are leading the race, they’re not alone. Sources indicate that Sekhukhune United are also keeping tabs on the player’s situation, and may swoop in if negotiations with Gallants break down.

Interest in Kgamanyane highlights a broader trend of PSL clubs tapping into talent from neighbouring leagues, with the Botswana international seen as someone who could adapt quickly given his previous exposure to South African football.

With Gallants and Gaborone United still apart on valuation, it remains to be seen whether the deal will materialize. But one thing is clear — Thatayaone Kgamanyane is a hot commodity, and his next move could be a major storyline in the current transfer window.
