Matias Esquivel’s Future at Club Atletico Talleres in Doubt After Disappointing Loan Spell

Argentine playmaker Matias Esquivel’s future at Argentine club Club Atletico Talleres is uncertain, as reports suggest that the 25-year-old is no longer in the club’s plans midway through his loan spell. Esquivel, who joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2024 for a hefty €2.30 million (R44.4 million), had high expectations when he arrived in South Africa. However, his time with the South African giants did not unfold as anticipated.

Esquivel’s Struggles at Sundowns and Loan to Talleres

Esquivel’s spell at Mamelodi Sundowns saw him make just 13 appearances, without making a significant impact in terms of goals or assists. In August 2024, Sundowns decided to send him on loan to Argentine side CA Talleres, hoping that a return to his home country would reignite his career. However, the move has yet to bear fruit, as Esquivel has struggled to find his form, failing to register a goal or assist in his 12 appearances for Talleres.

CA Talleres’ Decision on Esquivel’s Future

According to Argentine outlet Hoy Día Córdoba, the management of CA Talleres has made the decision to part ways with Esquivel. His underwhelming performance in the first half of the season has led to the conclusion that he will not be part of the club’s long-term plans. It is still unclear whether Talleres has the option to terminate the loan agreement, but it appears that Esquivel’s time with the club will be coming to an end soon.

Esquivel is one of three loan signings being discarded by CA Talleres, along with Ramiro Ruíz Rodríguez, who has returned to Atlético Tucumán, and Lautaro Morales, who has gone back to Lanús. This decision signals a tough period for Esquivel, who was once seen as one of the top talents in Argentine football.

Sundowns Still Holding On to Esquivel

Despite his disappointing loan spell in Argentina, Esquivel is still under contract with Mamelodi Sundowns for the next three-and-a-half years, having signed a four-and-a-half-year deal when he joined the club. The next steps for the diminutive midfielder remain unclear, with the possibility of him returning to Sundowns to reassert himself or being loaned out again to another club yet to be determined.

While his time in South Africa and Argentina has been challenging, Esquivel still has a significant portion of his contract remaining at Chloorkop, and it will be interesting to see how Sundowns manage his future in the coming months.

As it stands, Matias Esquivel’s career is at a crossroads, and his next move could shape his professional journey in the years to come.
