Mbekezeli Mbokazi: From Shy Talent to Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana Standout

Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has transformed from a quiet, reserved youngster into a commanding presence for both his club and Bafana Bafana. Known off the pitch as shy and soft-spoken, Mbokazi’s influence on the field tells a different story.
Mbokazi’s journey began at Langalibalele Sports Academy, where senior coach Wonder Mnguni first spotted his talent during the Engen Knockout Challenge. Mnguni recalled that the defender joined the academy in mid-2023, coming from Hluhluwe, a region with limited professional football opportunities.
“When we invite players from rural areas for tournaments, we hope to give them chances,” Mnguni said. “Mbekezeli stood out immediately. I remember watching him play in the under-18 team against a senior side, and I was moved. He was perfect on the day. We only polished a few details before he left.”
Despite his talent, Mbokazi struggled to assert himself off the pitch. Mnguni explained that previous coaches took advantage of his quiet nature, limiting his opportunities. Even when it came to joining the Engen Knockout Challenge, local coaches tried to prevent him from leaving. His uncle had to enforce the move with a sjambok to ensure he could seize better opportunities in Durban.
On the field, however, Mbokazi was a different player. “Whenever he entered the field, he commanded. He didn’t care that he was new; he just wanted to perform and not fail,” Mnguni said.
Since breaking into the first team, Mbokazi’s rise has been meteoric. He quickly established himself as a pivotal figure at Orlando Pirates and earned one of the captaincy roles due to his leadership and consistent performances. His form has also made him a key defensive option for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos.
Mbokazi’s growth reflects a rare combination of natural talent, resilience, and work ethic. Despite missing the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Rwanda due to suspension, he remains a cornerstone for club and country and a model for young South African players navigating similar challenges.
His story underscores the importance of opportunity, guidance, and determination in turning a talented but shy youngster into a national team standout.
