Mbokazi Reveals Key Factor Behind His Rapid Rise at Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has credited the influence of his experienced teammates for fast-tracking his progress in the first team. The 19-year-old put in another stellar performance on Saturday, helping his side secure a crucial 1-0 win over Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Although Nkosinathi Sibisi scored the only goal of the match, it was Mbokazi who walked away with the Man of the Match award after a commanding display in central defence. This marked his third such accolade since making his senior debut last month.
Notably, Pirates have yet to lose a match when Mbokazi has featured, further underlining his growing importance in the squad.
The Key to His Confidence
Speaking after the match, Mbokazi acknowledged the role of his coaches and senior teammates in his rapid development.
“Firstly, I want to thank my coaches and my teammates for the work we have done together,” he said.
“For me, it is sometimes easier to play with older players. For example, when I play along with ‘Bhodlela’ (Sibisi) or ‘TP’ (Tapelo Xoki), it’s easier for me because what boosts my self-belief is knowing that they will help me.”
Mbokazi added that having the trust of his teammates has allowed him to play with freedom and confidence.
“When I do the things I’ve been doing, I have no fear because I know if you play with fear, too many mistakes might happen. But because my teammates have given me the licence to say ‘do whatever you want to do,’ that is what has helped me play with confidence.”
“I’m not afraid of anything. My teammates are here, guiding me, and everything becomes easier,” he concluded.
A Future Bafana Bafana Star?
Mbokazi’s impressive performances have already sparked talk of a potential Bafana Bafana call-up. In the meantime, he is expected to be part of the South Africa U20 squad that will travel to North Africa for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations later this month.
With Pirates closing the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns to 12 points—while still holding three matches in hand—Mbokazi’s presence at the back could be crucial in the team’s pursuit of silverware this season.
