Bafana Bafana take on Liberia this evening and again on Tuesday in their AFCON Qualifiers. Forward Mihlali Mayambela is pinching himself at the thought of representing his country.
The striker left South Africa to pursue a career in Europe at the age of 18. He is 26 years old now and plays for Aris Limassol in Cyprus.
Mayambela made his national team debut last year in September against Sierra Leone, scoring in the encounter.
“My family drove from Cape Town to see my game. My son was in the stands and that moment will stand out forever.” The striker told the SAFA media department.
“One day I would like to show him that game and just how much I hold onto it. I would encourage him to go for his dreams like I did mine, even if he wants to follow in my footsteps and play football, that’s OK too.
“It’s such a great feeling. I know I was in denial, especially my debut when I only really believed that I got the nod when I saw it on the television, which made it real for me.” He added.
He is famously the younger brother of the much-revered Mark Mayambela.
“It was hard in the beginning because I was compared to my brother Mark all the time, and so I almost stopped playing football. I left South Africa at the age of 18 daring to be different, to be my own man, my own player and for the comparison to stop, and it worked, luckily for me,” he spoke.
He will hope to play as part as South Africa host Liberia this evening at the Orlando Stadium. Mihlali Mayambela Thrilled to Be Part of Bafana Bafana Setup!
