Mike Makaab Expresses Concern Over Orlando Pirates’ Squad Depth Amid Grueling Campaigns

Orlando Pirates’ ambitions to compete across multiple tournaments have raised questions about their squad depth, following a heavy 4-1 defeat to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld. The loss highlighted the gap between the two teams, with Sundowns extending their unbeaten league run under Miguel Cardoso and solidifying their dominance at the top of the DStv Premiership.

Mike Makaab, a former Pirates coach turned player agent, shared his thoughts on the Buccaneers’ challenges during an interview with Gagasi FM. While praising the work of head coach Jose Riveiro, Makaab expressed concern about whether Pirates possess the squad depth needed to compete on all fronts.

Makaab’s Assessment of the Buccaneers

Makaab pointed out the critical nature of the upcoming clash between Pirates and Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium, which could be a pivotal moment in the title race.

“If Pirates win their game in hand, we talk about six points. Pirates have got to play Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium, and it’s happening sooner rather than later,” Makaab said. “If Sundowns do a double, it’s gonna be very difficult for Pirates to claw back. Six points is definitely doable, but nine points? That’s a tough ask.”

The former coach acknowledged Riveiro’s achievements, including guiding Pirates to five trophies in three seasons and maintaining strong performances in the league and Caf Champions League. However, he emphasized the need for additional transfer windows to strengthen the squad.

“My only concern is, does Orlando Pirates have the depth in their squad to be challenging on so many fronts? Time will tell. I think they still need a couple of transfer windows to bolster the entire squad,” Makaab added.

The Challenges Ahead

Pirates have already secured one trophy this season and topped their Caf Champions League group, but their demanding schedule has exposed vulnerabilities in their squad. Fatigue and the ability to rotate players effectively remain pressing issues for Riveiro.

Makaab stressed the importance of continued faith in the coach, who has transformed the Buccaneers into genuine contenders. However, he acknowledged the daunting task of closing the gap on Sundowns, a team he described as “an incredibly well-oiled machine.”

The Bigger Picture

With Pirates still competing for multiple honors, their depth will be tested further as the season progresses. The club will need to prioritize identifying reinforcements in the upcoming transfer windows to ensure they remain competitive.

While Sundowns’ dominance is undeniable, Makaab believes Pirates’ success in continental competitions and domestic cups showcases the strides the team has made under Riveiro’s leadership. However, to dethrone Sundowns and sustain their success, addressing their squad depth will be paramount.

The Orlando Pirates vs. Mamelodi Sundowns rematch at the Orlando Stadium is shaping up to be a season-defining encounter, not just for the league title race but also as a measure of Pirates’ ability to rise to the occasion against South Africa’s most dominant team.
