Mohau Nkota’s Meteoric Rise: From Orlando Pirates Rookie to Saudi Pro League Star

In less than a year, Mohau Nkota has transformed from a promising young talent at Orlando Pirates into a sought-after star securing a life-changing move to Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq. His rapid rise stands as a testament to his skill, determination, and the trust placed in him by coaches and fans alike.

Just 12 months ago, Nkota was playing mainly in the Developmental Division Challenge (DDC), still waiting for his breakthrough moment with the Buccaneers’ first team. It wasn’t until September 29, 2024, that then-head coach Jose Riveiro handed the 19-year-old winger his senior debut, introducing him with less than 20 minutes remaining in an away fixture against Richards Bay.

Previously, Nkota had been an unused substitute against Polokwane City, but the real turning point came in October when he stepped into the spotlight in the absence of Pirates’ star winger Monnapule Saleng. Wearing the number 33 jersey, Nkota announced himself with a stunning brace against AmaZulu — his first goal a thunderous strike from outside the box that caught goalkeeper Richard Ofori off guard. His joyous celebration, sprinting half the length of the pitch to thank Riveiro, highlighted the special bond between player and coach.

Nkota didn’t stop there. Six minutes later, he doubled his tally and came agonizingly close to a hat-trick before halftime, with a shot that rattled the post after a signature move involving a drop of the shoulder and a deft step-over that left defenders flat-footed.

His impact extended beyond domestic competitions. In the CAF Champions League, Nkota delivered a crucial brace away at CR Belouizdad, and scored again in high-profile matches against MC Algiers and Pyramids FC, further proving his ability to perform on the continental stage.

By the end of his debut season, Nkota had amassed an impressive 39 appearances, netting seven goals and providing five assists — a haul that earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up for the June FIFA international fixtures.

His breakthrough season did not go unnoticed, with Nkota receiving nominations for the Premiership Young Player of the Season and Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player awards. But the crowning achievement came with his transfer to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq, marking a significant step up both professionally and financially.

Nkota’s new contract reportedly makes him a Rand millionaire before his 21st birthday in November — a remarkable feat for a player who was yet to make his senior debut just a year earlier. At Al Ettifaq, he will join a star-studded squad that includes Dutch international and former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who commands the highest salary at the club, earning an estimated €17.5 million (around R361 million) annually.

Mohau Nkota’s journey from a young prospect in the Orlando Pirates youth ranks to a rising star in the Saudi Pro League encapsulates the promise and potential of South African football’s next generation. As he embarks on this new chapter, all eyes will be on the talented winger to see how far his talent and ambition can take him on the international stage.
